step 2 scores important?

I am looking for good advice regarding whether to take step 2 (COMLEX) in august or january. I feel I'd do better in January (some ggod rotation just prior) and wondering how much programs look for these scores for interviews, etc. I should add that some of my hesitation is due to not wanting to tarnish my step 1 score (>95th percentile). I will be applying to PM&R programs.
