That's old news, but I don't think it's really true.
Tons of applicants don't have a Step 2 and match just fine to very competitive specialties.

A strong Step 2 can only help your app, but I wouldn't say it's more important.

doubt it. I talked to residency director for radiology during specialty fair and he said they don't even look at step 2. He said step 1 is the most important factor and next is medicine grade. They only quickly glance step 2 to make sure youre not failing the test. But then n=1 so take it for what it's worth

Well, I'm in Ophthalmology (early match), so it may not make it that applicable, but Step 2 doesn't seem to matter, at least for me. I haven't taken it yet (I will in February) and not one residency program has mentioned it.

This is definitely variable. I'm also going into radiology and a PD from a well know west coast residency told me they put more weight on Step 2 if it is available.

h

Step 1 gets you chopped off the interview pile if your score is below the cuttoff.

Step 2 gets you in the door for an interview either over another applicant who didnt have Step 2, or can be a backup if your step 1 was borderline

Neither have anything to do with residency ranking, unless the program is run by a douchebag who only wants high numbers.
