STEP 2 Strategy

I had to look at my app to answer b/c its not very straight forward...

If you have your step 2 result before you submit your app, say Sept 1st, then there is nothing you can do to hide the score. If you don't have it then you can choose to submit your current step 1 score, and choose to not automatically submit step 2 when the score is available.

I haven't met anyone who did worse, but its possible. If you did over 200 then not taking it is something to consider. I studied my ace off and went up 10pts.

You bet it's possible...it happened to me. I got over-confident from my Step I scores & took Step II cold...not a good idea. I still did fine compared to others, but definitely a blow to the old ego!

definitely possible.

I improved but I studied. One of my classmates had a solid step 1 score and then went and failed step 2. Not a good idea.

He matched at his second choice and moved on. Still it is something you need to prepare for.

Do programs need your step 2 before they rank you on the match? If they don't I would like to hold off on sending my score but not if it means missing out on being ranked in the match by programs that require it.

Any thoughts from you out there who did well on Step 1 but below average on Step 2 and how that affected your match would be appreciated. Thanks.

Would anyone recommend waiting to take Step 2 until say January if they did well on step I (say 230-250). Especially in terms of EM program directors. Do they tend to look much at step 2 and would they wonder why you hadn't taken it yet?

Thank you.

I would look on some of the programs you applied to and check out their web sites. I noticed that some of them wanted a "complete" application which included Step II.

Since you did rather well on Step I, it may not be such a big deal, but remeber PD's tend to weigh Step II much more heavily-So you could study and bring your score up and really be helping yourself out. I waited to find out my score, then chose to release it after I found that it was better.

Also-those who have waited just said it sucked to have yet another thing hanging over their head to do.

Hope this helps-

this is the experience i had last year... applied mainly to northeast (ma, ny, pa, dc) programs

i didn't get a great score on step I, probably around national average. took step 2 in december. didn't release it to any programs. actually probably interviewed at 5 or so before i even took it. only went to a handful after i got my score back. only one for my score on step 2 and i just told them that i hadn't gotten them back. so basically i would say if you have a high step 1 score, you don't need step 2.

to give you an idea i'll list a portion of places i interviewed at -- in no particular order -- bu, suny-downstate, jacobi, temple, mcp, penn, christiana.
