in FA, there are only a couple check boxes for PE.

it looks like it doesn't even matter.
you can just do it halfassed for 1 minute, and they would still check the box.

that means you can spend 14 minutes on hx taking and counseling?

My understanding was that the patients are trained to evaluate our techniques on the PE/CS exams to some extent (like making sure we listen to the heart in four different areas), so I wouldn't risk not taking the PE part seriously.

I wouldn't bet on them placing too much emphasis on the exam, however. There are so many different ways of doing it...

I never did egophony for any of the pulmonary exams. Subconsciously I had a hard time paying any attention to physical exam findings as half of the time my SPs sucked at "mimicking" real findings.

The angle I took was that all things are created equal, in that every history component counts as much as every physical component. With that, I blew off doing lengthy stuff like orthostatics b/c in the time it would take to do them properly, you could get in very good history and overall probably do better on the encounter.

At the same time, if you are going to do some component of the PE be thorough with it, b/c if you screw it up you've essentially just wasted all the time you took to do it.

yeah. i was looking at that too. No way am i gonna take 2 blood pressure readings doing orthostatics. That's a complete skip for me. besides, the SP will be completely normal on physical exam.

and as a rule?, we don't need to take bp anyway.

when they do the official instructions, they keep it vague by saying to accept vitals but do them if you feel it's necessary...I just put them in my test to order.
