I was wondering if taking step 3 before starting intern year was possible, but I've also read that scheduling permits may be delayed until graduation?

Also, do most programs help pay for step 3 (not sure if this is a thing?)

Apparently many (most?) programs subsidize the step 3 fee. From what I understand, in order to schedule step 3 your school must report that you have graduated. Some schools do that faster than others so it depends on if you can squeeze it in between them making you eligible and starting orientation for residency (which will likely be before July 1).

We are probably thinking about doing the same thing. I would rather do some UW at the end of 4th year and take the thing to just pass it and get it done.

Edit: also, if you take it early then you won't get reimbursed the $800 or whatever it costs.

Some programs help pay and some dont. Mine gives CME money every year. Most use the money from intern year to pay for UWorld and then maybe some of it for step 3 in second year. Given COVID, not much conference travel happening lol

Yes, you have to wait until you graduate for step 3.

do most people just focus on intern year and use a chill elective month or vacation time to study for/take step 3?

Yeah, mostly. Intern year is hard. There is a huge learning curve and depending what you go into, long hours much of the time.

My program did not subsidize Step 3, pay for UWorld, or do any of the above. I would recommend enjoying your time now but different strokes for different folks. If you're doing IM/EM/Gen Surg year, you're better off taking it after a decent part of intern year anyways. It will help with the CCS component and personally a lot of the material you just understand more (by seeing it in practice) after or during intern year. That said, if you're a test whiz go ahead pay for UWorld, study for it, and you can always pick your date after you graduate.
