I'll start with some background: I'm an M4 waiting for Match Day and want to know if I would be able to get Step3 out of the way before residency starts. Now, before everyone starts calling me a gunner, I've had some problems with tests in the past, which is why I'm even thinking of this and not going on a vacation spree. I have March as an easy elective so I figured it wouldn't be such a bad idea studying for the test.

So my questions is, what do you think about my plan?:
1. I plan on studying for the test, and if I match, I will take it at the end of the month.
2. I plan on studying for the test, and if I DO NOT match, I will NOT take it at the end of the month. This way, if I need to reapply next year, I will not gamble having a failing grade on my record (if it doesn't go as planned). But if I matched and fail, it won't get me kicked out of the program and I will still have a residency position next year.

Are there flaws in my logic? Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks

You have to have an MD to register for the test

Thanks, I just now read that on the website too. I should have checked before asking. But in that case, has anyone in the past registered for the test immediately after graduation and took the test at the end of June? Is June usually an orientation month? I'm assuming most residencies start in July?

Many residencies start as early as mid-june for required orientation activities.

At least back when I took the test it was way too long between submitting the registration forms and getting your confirmation back to take it in that window
