I went to the FSMB website and I am confused as to when we can take step 3. The website says that all states as of January 2007 require at least 1 year of postgraduate training before being licensed. BUT what about taking step 3. I know people have said there are ~13 states that allow you to take step 3 before starting residency, but what website states this?

License and sitting for step3 exam are two different issues. Yes, for sure to have unrestricted license you have to have step3 and minimum time in residency training. There are about 11 states like CA have no residency training requirement to sit for step3.

okay...so I can apply for step 3 in CA and take it wherever I want to after I receive my MD?

The list is fine, but how long each board will take to approve your application to sit for the exam. From personal experience with CA, it takes about one week. I heard that NY takes months because you have to apply for license at the same time. So, if you want to sit early go with CA. If you don’t care and not in hurry, just wait to start residency and go with your state, some programs pay you the exam fees and give you good vacation (few days up to one month) for the exam

I am from NY and will likely be hear for residency and after that. Can I apply through a state that doesn't require a licensure application to sit for step 3 and then simply use this score when I apply for my NYS license down the road?

So is it possible to take step 3 right after graduation? I live in CT. I'm doing my residency in path, so I don't think I'll be any more prepared in a year.

Yes, it's possible. in fact you can take it in CT. i'll be in the same situation after graduation and therefore need to take the damn exam before i lose more patient management info.

It looked to me from the FSMB website that you have to have an MD or DO degree to apply for Step 3, not just at the time you take the test. (http://www.fsmb.org/usmle_elistep3.html) It seems like this might make it difficult to take the test ASAP after graduation; I'd imagine it takes at least a couple of weeks for them to process your application.
What do you guys think? Am I missing something? I'd really like to take the test at the middle/end of May, but graduation is mid-May.
Thanks.

you're right about having the MD in hand to apply for step 3. i think it's possible to take it within a month of applying, or so i've heard. so for you, mid-June is more likely.
