I have matched for ophtho to start in 2011, and I am finishing my intern year right now. I would like to take Step 3 soon, and I was trying to decide which state board I should go through. Anybody with past experience have any recommendations? I will completing my ophtho residency in New York, but my program told me I do not have to have a NY state medical license during residency.

California's has no requirements, and you don't have to submit an additional application or fee, so I was planning on going through them. Will that cause me any problems down the road, or am I good to go?

Thanks in advance.

for clarification, I mean which state should I go through with regards to Step 3 - they make you choose.

I don't ever remember having to choose a state for step 3. Does it matter which state you take it in? Isn't it a national standardized exam?

it's not which state you take it in, it is which state's medical board you go through. Some have additional applications. They all have different requirements, or lack thereof. California basically has no requirements, but I want to make sure I will not be shooting myself in the foot down the road.

as far as I know, step 3 is a national, standardized exam. As such, no matter what state you take it in, the test and scoring will be the same across the board. Not sure if each state has different application requirements or not. The state you take it in should not affect the test itself or scoring of the test or your ability to later apply for any state license.

you end up applying for your state license during your final year of residency. No state board, as far as I know, will ask you what state you took step 3 in, only WHEN you took it and what your SCORE was.

choose any state.. it doesn't matter... many ppl choose CA cause that makes you eligible prior to finishing intern year.. and there are minimal hidden fees as seen with other states.. doesn't matter which state you register through as far as my experience can tell.

My year, I heard CT was the best/easiest state, so I registered with the CT board for it and took the test in TX.
