If you are at a DO school, obviously you will have to take step 1 and 2 of the comlex (maybe step 1 of the usmle as well). My question is this:

What if you do an allopathic (acgme) residency. Do you take step 3 of the usmle or the comlex?

If you are doing an allopathic residency and you have no plans of being a physcian member of the AOA or want to practice in the state of Louisiana, then only take the USMLE. Otherwise, take the COMLEX III. Each to his/her own. I'm taking everything. Good luck.

There is just one catch. You may only take the USMLE III if you've taken steps I and II. Personally, I had no interest in taking two sets of boards for parts I & II and only took the COMLEX. I've had no problems getting interviews from allopathic programs. Of course it depends on how competitive your chosen specialty is.
