I'm not sure whether I want to take Step I, and was wondering for people who have completed medicine rotation, do you feel you could have performed better?

Ummmm . . . I guess I'm not sure if I want to take it either . . . .

With that said, I've been studying my tail off so I'd rather just get it done at this point

It'd be different if their were retakes. But no retakes. And I have no doubt that I would pass, but average, or slightly above won't cut it, and I would rather decide after doing rotations that I am/am not interested in a competitive specialty, and then act accordingly.

What you're asking really depends on your program and what kind of time you get to take Step 1 and what options you have for when you can take it. I think it's really hard to say. If I had more time to take step one sure I'd take a little more time just to hammer some extra concepts out but would I take it almost a year after my path and pharm classes? Nah.

You don't want to be studying for Step 1 during rotations... period. Thats suicide.

As for knowledge from rotations... probably not. Internal medicine residents and attendings don't care much for zebras (which can constitute quite a bit of boards). In fact, most attendings would probably have a difficult time passing Step 1 if they had to take it tomorrow. Core clerkships are there to help prepare you for Step 2 (which is more a medical management exam).

i have heard from friends at other med schools that it was difficult to remember all the basic science after being on the wards. sure you see diseases that are covered in FA, but you probably wont see alot of the obscure ones that are highly tested (ie pheochromocytoma, marfan's, etc).

i thought about taking step 1 after my medicine rotation b/c i thought that it would help with pharm too, but after talking with a few upper classmen, i got convinced that after 2nd year was the best time to do so. they said that the pharm used on the wards doesnt help u in the manner that's it's tested on the boards--ie SEs, mechanisms, etc. that stuff is more just memorization and understanding FA.
