All the MS3's and some MS4's are selling their books now that its the semi-beginning of the year. In order to get cheap books I'd like to take advantage of some of the deals, but I'm interested in hearing from some of you who've taken Step I as to what books you think were worth it and what weren't. In addition to a basic outline book like First Aid or Med Essentials, how many subjects do students need to actually purchase a review book for? For instance I've heard some say that FA has everything you need to know about the drugs, but then I've heard others say that BRS Pharm cards are a must. I've heard some people say that the only thing they bought beyond FA and a Qbank was Gouljan rapid review path, then I see students e-mailing my class selling a "high-yield" book for almost every subject we've been taught. Obviously time is of the essence when studying for Step I, so I can't read/memorize every review book... Which ones worked out best for people? I'm especially interested in hearing from those of you who did well/very well on the boards; and also from any of you who performed average to slightly above average in your classes but turned around and got a great score on Step I

Don't even doubt these book recommendations (I'm sure most would agree):
Goljan Pathology Rapid Review
First Aid

My personal recommendations on top of that:
HY Neuro
HY cell and molec bio
CMMRS
BRS physio

Go on over to the Step 1 Forum and take a look at people's exam experiences... nearly everyone has posted their method of prep, resources they used, and the score they achieved. You will definitely start to see a trend with what books people like to use.

On another note... I never sell my books. I don't know why but I have an attachment to them and have notes and junk written on the pages. Weird. Goodluck!

Yeah, pretty much all those books are considered "Very good". to "Excellent" If you can get them cheap, do it. If you end up hating them, I guarantee you'll find a classmate who will be interested in picking them up.

Oh and CMMRS is Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple since it's not an obvious acronym.

Dude there's an entire thread with dozens and dozens of successful Step I booklists w/reviews, exam impressions, practice progressions, and scores all in one place for you to peruse (as stated above), why would you start a brand new thread that a handful of random anonymous people would respond to? Just read the USMLE Step I Experiences 2008 thread.
