Should I take step II prior to residency application or should I wait. I want to apply for Ob/Gyn. Had above national average for step I but GPA is currently a 2.93. Trying to pull it up to a 3.0 with the next few rotations I have. In addition, I could really use that time to study for my JIs since I am hoping to get letters of recommendation out of those rotation. I am really scared given the number of people who failed to matched into moderately competitive programs from my school this year.

It is also advisable to do an away for ob/gyn?

What school is this? You guys have GPAs in med school???

I am also applying into ObGyn,
You should take step 2 ASAP after the end of third year. You did well on step 1 and will only do better on step 2, especially if you dont let too much time elapse from your third year rotations. Your GPA is less important than your step scores since most schools dont have GPA's per se and therefore residency programs dont know how to read one GPA from another while step scores they all understand.
Dont stress, with your scores you should be fine. Make some friends in your Ob department and get a one or 2 good letters and you should match no problem.

At my school your GPA is simply a weighted average of P/HP/H, where each P = 2, HP =3, and H = 4. Therefore someone with a 2.93 is coming pretty close to HP on average. Most people never reference GPA however, we just discuss the raw letters.

I don't think I rank well either. I don't know if they send the our class ranks but if they do, I screwed. class averages from graduating classes tend to be 3.4. I guest those M4 classes should add to it.

My adviser tells me that you're smartest right after you finish third year. Consequently, the vast majority of my classmates are studying for Step 2 right now. I, on the other hand, landed a Peds AI as my first rotation, so I'm putting it off a few months.

But people generally do better on Step 2 than Step 1... if you think your step 1 score is mediocre for the places you're applying, it's to your advantage to take Step 2 early.

Finally got a 3.03 GPA landmark. Still scared about OB/GYN but I think I should be able to get a few interviews now.

Nobody cares about your GPA in OB/Gyn. Just honor your OB rotation, apply broadly, and rank all of the programs you'd be willing to attend.
