Okay, I seem to be missing this point all the time.

Can anyone just lay out some of the basics of sterilizing techniques for Bacteria/Viruses/Spores. Just some points to help me in tomorrows exams..I always screw them up...Guess this chapter of Micro I just skipped in med years 😀

Alcohols = disrupt cell membranes by denaturizing proteins = not sporicidal (requires water because it functions best at 60-90%

Chlorhexidine = disrupts cell mebranes by coagulation of cytoplasm = not sporicidal (also neurotoxic)

Hydrogen Peroxide= free radicals = sporicidal

Iodine = halogenation of proteins and nucleic acids = sporicidal

Also, I saw some question of autoclaving bedpans/instruments/Lab coats etc...Any thoughts on that? I always mix up moist heat with dry heat or oven tech...it wud be great if someone can just elaborate on those..

As for seeing these questions, I saw 3 in NBME's and a few in UW..
