Should I get a stethoscope before I go to vet school? If so, what kind? I’m not sure where I’m going to school yet, but I am interested in small animal medicine!

I don’t know if any schools require one model over another. I’m sure that current students at different schools can shed some light on that. I know that the standard is the littmann cardiology. Some people have the 3, others the 4. The 4 is just the newest model. Others get the classic 3. Both have an adult and a pediatric side. I like the master classic 2 since it’s longer and I don’t have to lean as much, especially since I’m tall. But any of those three are used by tons of people in vet school from what I’ve seen. Some people are using the Eko now, but that probably has to do with certain schools having classes/rotations that make use of the ability to record heart and lung sounds.

I have the cardiology 4 and love it.

Some cardiologists will recommend the Welch Allyn Harvey Elite over Littman but at the end of the day its a personal preference. I have a Littman Master Cardiology. The Cardiology III or IV is prob one of the most popular stethoscopes.

It depends. I've sifted through pretty much all of the existing threads on stethoscopes and it sounds like there might be some schools that prefer certain ones for their vet students, but in general it's a good idea to get one so you are familiar with the instrument and using it. Littmann is the go-to brand and I LOVE mine. When it comes to model, it's a balancing act between personal preferences, budget, and intended use. I work with equine and large animal vets, so for my budget it made more sense to stick with something that very well might get trashed, so I scoured these threads and ended up getting the 3M Littmann Classic III. I love it and I know down the road if it takes a beating in the field I can invest in a new one or I can upgrade based on my plans and interests and/or the school I attend. Does that make sense?

Good luck and happy stethoscope shopping!
