still no word from Columbia

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone out there is still waiting for a decision from Columbia? Most schools need a deposit by next week, so I really need to make a decision this week.

I originally applied to the Global Health track, which I was rejected from. The admissions committee thought I was a better fit for the Social Science Research track (which upon looking over their website and speaking with faculty, I agreed with). I submitted a new statement of purpose 3 weeks ago, within 24 hours of their request, but haven't yet received a decision. I realize that's not a lot of time, but this could become very expensive for me if I have to put down a deposit at another school next week, only to lose it if I get into Columbia and decide to go there.

Anyone else still waiting? Or if anyone has been placed on a waitlist, have you already been told? I've contacted them several times to receive an update, only to be told "they hope to have a decision to me soon".

Why don't you decide what your second best option is, ask for an extension on the decision date and wait out Columbia? If they asked you to write a new statement and agreed to review the application again it sounds promissing!

If you ask for an extension at your second option (that is without putting down the deposit) and god forbid, you don't get into Columbia as well - you'll lose out on both.
Be firm with Columbia about needing a response - they have been very slow/ and unresponsive in general which has been very off putting for me.
Anyhow, if you don't hear back - then just go with the other school you've gotten into...

thanks for your replies! i sent in a deposit to yale today.

i spoke with columbia's admissions. they said that the admissions committee is not scheduled to meet again until mid-April, so if anyone else out there is still waiting to hear from them before deciding on a school, I'd recommend sending in a deposit somewhere else too. it doesn't appear that they're viewing April 15 as a deadline.

I called today... still no decision for me... I'm not too worried because I got into a bunch of other places. It's just annoying to not know...
