Honest question, without getting too political: what is realistically going to happen to the dollar with all this talk of stimulus, even possibly 2K per person, and our country being trillions in debt and constantly printing money? What is the end game? How sustainable is this for our country? And what could be a reason why the dollar WON’T suffer the same fate that other currencies from other countries have? My knowledge of economics is very basic...

Funny I just asked this same question. Gold and now Bitcoin are soaring. It’s hard to not believe that there will be a major issue with the currency over the next few years.
min looking into buying real estate and actual gold.

Tens of millions of Americans are behind on their rents or mortgages. Record lines at food banks. Many small businesses on the verge of closing. Many large Businesses looking at big lay offs or bankruptcy if they don’t have customers or handouts. Municipalities finances are basket cases..., etc., etc.

I believe in fiscal conservatism and am worried about the debt, but this is not the time for austerity. The question is where do you spend the money to get the most bang for the buck. When things sort of improve, Who do you tell that they are are not getting what was promised or expected. To bail out everybody is to bail out nobody because the currency will be debased. That might happen anyway.

agree that stimulus is necessary at this time. if this means taxing more once the economy recovers so be it. when the situation is so dire for so many people. the important thing though is that the money is actually going to the people who need it, not to line the pockets of Trump crony fat cats.

There, fixed that. Now, moving forward under this supposition, if we are faced with increased prices on everything due to devaluation/inflation/money printing or increased prices on all imported goods due to a value added tax, I would opt for the latter. At least it would POSSIBLY encourage businesses to move back stateside with production.

This non targeted payment of $2000 per adult and per child is insanity in terms of the national debt. I think each adult should get $2000 in a targeted manner based on need not just a lazy blanketed hand out. This money will go to tons of retirees who are living comfortably and not working and will also go to people who have not lost their jobs and are working from home making a 6 figure or close to 6 figure income. The american people need help but so much of it will go to many of those who do not necessarily need it.

i haven't read up much into this. is everyone getting a $2000 check?

Right now it's just $600. And it's based on income for individuals and/or families based on the most recent tax return. There is a max income per person where the payment starts phasing out, and then a max income where it is eliminated entirely.

As it stands right now, since I was a resident until midway through this year, both myself and my wife qualify for whatever payment they end up sending. Since I'm now an attending we are doing fine and certainly don't need the money like plenty of others. I don't know of any way to refuse the money other than to file 2020 taxes before they send the checks, which we likely won't be able to do. So we will take the money and spend it on small businesses in the area.

Yeah. Stimulus checks are bull****. Many of the PPP "loans" were bull****.

I guess giving money to people(those that lost employment or had significant cut in hours), businesses (in general small), that actually need it is too much to ask for though. Some people are starving and about to be evicted. Others are status quo from what they were pre-pandemic. Giving them both the same thing is asinine.

Buddies in private practice were making more money with this PPP for a few months than they were working. Which is insanity for highly paid physicians. Also shows how much money was just being blindly thrown out to whoever could claim it.

How is this even possible unless you have an awful job or don't work that much?

I agree 100% with crazy money being thrown out there although the rules are changing for payback. You would have to be crazy to turn down the "free" cheese though!

I know. Even my socialist behind lined my pockets for a months worth of free cheese.
I felt like if the big rich companies are doing it, why not me? And at the time, I did “need“ it more than I do now.

We are a relatively small practice and our hospital hired us to help cover the ICU, airways, central lines, a lines, emergent OR cases. We ended up doing fairly well with OB, OR, PPP HPP, and hospital assistance.
I thought everybody did all that stuff already? (except ICU)

Lol. Why would we be surprised that a socialist would take free government cash 😉

From what I've seen its a massive bill mostly going to just about anywhere in the world that doesn't fall under the category "people who need it." As of now those people are getting $600.

Massive American debt doesn’t matter as long as the world economy continues to believe it doesn’t matter. Just like the value of a dollar or democracy, it exists because enough people believe in it.
Math is undefeated. It won't be any different this time than all the other times. Massive American debt definitely matters.

You may think your knowledge of economics is basic, but your instincts to ask those critical questions is outstanding. Unfortunately without being too cynical, I don't think you'll get your wish of answers not being politically oriented.

Dead people may get some of the $600 stimulus checks the federal government began issuing Tuesday night.

That would mirror what happened this past spring, when deceased individuals were among the recipients of a prior round of direct payments, of up to $1,200 per person.

More than 1 million decedents had gotten a check by the end of April, worth a collective $1.4 billion, according to the Government Accountability Office. The IRS asked for that money back, leading to confusion and whiplash for heirs such as surviving spouses and family members.

Of course but the real question is whose problem will it be. Mine? My kids? Somewhere far enough that I don’t really care?

And the bill includes millions in foreign aid. Yes, it's part of the larger national security budget, but it's always fun to watch Republicans (and Democrats) cry for fiscal austerity while we continue to pummel large sums of money towards foreign allies and big business. Nobody will bring that up though.

Also, I'll never understand how the answer to "we ****ed up and gave people who didn't deserve money aid" is "lets not give anybody who actually needs it anything".

Besides the $10 mil a day we give to Israel we will be also sending them $500 mil. Israel is a country with universal healthcare and basically free college tuition. Shouldn't we be getting support from them?
How long will Americans in essence be willing to constantly pay an empire tax?

Don't people have to pay it back

at some point, one of the presidents will jack up taxes. especially taxes on people like you. high w2 wage workers. doesnt matter if you have 500k in loans and no savings.

there'll probably be a triggering event of some sort too

It's already becoming our problem. We're down to the last smoke and mirrors of monetizing the debt with currency inflation, as well as artificially holding down interest rates to a negligible amount. The debt is already smacking us in the face whether we realize it or not.

You do know what biden will do right? It was all over the place the taxes he wanted to put in

No problem. XYZ anesthesia group paid salaries to its employee docs who weren't working. Who also happen to be owners.
Thought the only eligible employees were only the ones making less than 100k ?

Everyone was eligible but income above $100k/yr would not be compensated by PPP. That’s why everybody hit up against the same limit, whether they make $200k or $500k.
