Stony Brook University...we'll what can I say about SBU...Stony is a GREAT University! I you compare it that of a Tick! Stony Brook is a blood sucking school. Once you are in...they don't want to let the claws out until it has deprived you of every last drop.
I made the unfortunate decision to get duped into coming here as an undergrad. They make it seem nice, but don't let the beautiful trees, the birds, and...oh yeah more trees, fool you. This university is known to be great at research! That is all the professors care for... their research only. They run away from you when you have questions about vital subjects. They only teach because they are forced to. These are brilliant professors, but just because you have your PHD does not qualify someone to be a teacher. They have no concern for their students. Most of them can't speak proper English.
I made an unfortunate decision to come to Stony Brook as an undergrad, I made the WORST decision to come back as a Graduate student. I though the professors would be much better, encouraging and want to see you succeed. That is in fact wrong! I was too idealistic. They are still ONLY concerned with their research and could care less of the students. I have talked to dental and med students (friends) and they agree with me.
There is absolutely nothing to do around Stony Brook, well there the town of Port Jefferson. They have some bad local bars and clubs, but after a while its very booring.
Stony brook seems to have a large selection of food all over campus. Well that may appear to be the case when you come here for a day. But if you stay longer, lets say 2 or 3 days, you will soon realize its all the same food! Its al the same things everyday. They may change around some fish and call it something else the next day, but its all the same. The student capacitive center, where they have the main food court for undergrads, closes around 8. They have Wendys on campus in one of the undergraduate quads, which closes at 12, but how much can someone eat fast food. Its disgusting and very unhealthy.
The main place where students of medicine, dentistry, nursing, and all the other health care students eat is in the HSC (Health Science Center) cafeteria. There selection of food is EXTREMELY redundant. Every day its the same thing! And they close at 8pm. So you need to hike over to the other side of campus...keep in mind hiking over to the other side of campus means you need to walk under a bridge across a street, though the undergrad quads just to get some food. I don't think its very pleasing to do that in the cold. Now yes you can drive over there, but are you willing to risk getting a $30 ticket. Ever since Stony Brook has lost tremendous amounts of funding and have been cutting back on everything, they have been giving out parking tickets, left, right, up down...from all sides you get bombarded.
Study areas
The HSC libary closes at 12:30 pm, while the undergad libiary in the Melivile Libary is open until 2pm. The people who really need to study late need to evacuate after 12:30pm. Its ridiculous. It gets very depressing looking at the towers every day through the windows of the library. There aren't enough computers for the students in HSC. In the library there is about 14 computers all of the medical, dental, and ALL the other health science students which include nurses, PT's, RC's...etc...
The computers are ALL old and arent updated... they have disk drives still! They are old IBM computers that constantly break down.
There is a separate small computer sinc site in HSC, which is next to the library...those computers are little bit better, but they are also very slow during the middle of the day when there is a lot o people there. Good luck trying to find a computer during the day...its almost impossible. Printing takes forever because people print out novels of notes! So you stand there fr 20 minutes waiting for your 2 pages to come out after someone finished printing 1000 page ebooks.
The living
Well if you decide to live on campus, Chapinin the Gaduate Quad next to the Hospital. There is also West Apartments and Shomberg, but that is all the way across the other side of campus, and it would be like a 30 minute walk to the hospital, and for dental school, forget it...you would have to take a bus because its in the middle of nowhere...its called the south campus (next to the university police department).
Chapin is the closet to the hospital. The housing is terrible...its low pay housing, about 700 for a single with all the works, cable, electricity and everything, and $400 for a double. If you are in dental or medical, get a single. Because housing is so cheap as opposed to off campus, where you would pay 700 to 800 just for the room without heat, electricity, cable or internet, they dont fix anything. If you have a leak or a clogged toilet they will take 2 week minimum to come to fix it. I have seen people to have holes in the walls between the window and the modeling and it becomes so cold during the winter. One poor guy and his wife, plugged the hole with news paper. The work crew came to fix it, saw the paper and said its looks fine to us and left.
If you want a heater because it is too cold, they barely have them to give out, and they are very stingy about it.
For dental school students...there is no way we can walk to the dental school from Chapin because the walk would entail walking to Nicols Rd (Rt. 97) and crossing it, dogging cars, and walking through the south entrance and finally getting to where the dental school vicinity. That should take about 20 - 30 minutes. Oh and I don't think there is a side walk to walk that way. Soooo you'll be treading on grass and the geese poop.
You can take a bus, but the bus is one way! Sooo the bus goes from Chapin, passes the hospital...does NOT stop at the hospital entrance (just to let you know)...enters into the undergrad side (west campus) and stops at the Student Activities Center (SAC) for a good 10 to 15 minutes). Along it way to the SAC it will stop at various other stops. Finally when its ready to leave the sac, it will go around the entire campus and than finally stop at the dental school bus stop. I would say its a 30 - 40 minute bus ride. Good luck. Oh yeah and the bus from Chapin is always packed.
If you have a car, I believe it costs $22 a month to park in the HSC garage. As dental school students you will have classes in both the dental school which is isolated from the world, and in HSC, because you also have classes with the medical school students in HSC.
There are plenty of more problems that I can list/explain, but I think this should do it for now. Just a terrible overall experience.
An entire website was published for this amazing school btw: Stonybrooksucks.com
And no, I did not apply to stony brook dental school, and no, I am not on the wait list. I would actually pay the extra hundred thousand to go to another school anywhere else. Just simply trying to help others from making a big mistake, provided they actually listen. I am not here to force you to make your decision. The chose is yours. I will not respond to any rebuttals to this post either, because I made my point and I don't care enough about this school to do so. Sorry.
Good Luck... hopes this helps persuade you all to come to this Fantastic University!
(Sorry for the spelling mistakes, I was in a rush)
