Stony Brook University...we'll what can I say about SBU...Stony is a GREAT University! I you compare it that of a Tick! Stony Brook is a blood sucking school. Once you are in...they don't want to let the claws out until it has deprived you of every last drop.
I made the unfortunate decision to get duped into coming here as an undergrad. They make it seem nice, but don't let the beautiful trees, the birds, and...oh yeah more trees, fool you. This university is known to be great at research! That is all the professors care for... their research only. They run away from you when you have questions about vital subjects. They only teach because they are forced to. These are brilliant professors, but just because you have your PHD does not qualify someone to be a teacher. They have no concern for their students. Most of them can't speak proper English.

I made an unfortunate decision to come to Stony Brook as an undergrad, I made the WORST decision to come back as a Graduate student. I though the professors would be much better, encouraging and want to see you succeed. That is in fact wrong! I was too idealistic. They are still ONLY concerned with their research and could care less of the students. I have talked to dental and med students (friends) and they agree with me.

There is absolutely nothing to do around Stony Brook, well there the town of Port Jefferson. They have some bad local bars and clubs, but after a while its very booring.
Stony brook seems to have a large selection of food all over campus. Well that may appear to be the case when you come here for a day. But if you stay longer, lets say 2 or 3 days, you will soon realize its all the same food! Its al the same things everyday. They may change around some fish and call it something else the next day, but its all the same. The student capacitive center, where they have the main food court for undergrads, closes around 8. They have Wendys on campus in one of the undergraduate quads, which closes at 12, but how much can someone eat fast food. Its disgusting and very unhealthy.
The main place where students of medicine, dentistry, nursing, and all the other health care students eat is in the HSC (Health Science Center) cafeteria. There selection of food is EXTREMELY redundant. Every day its the same thing! And they close at 8pm. So you need to hike over to the other side of campus...keep in mind hiking over to the other side of campus means you need to walk under a bridge across a street, though the undergrad quads just to get some food. I don't think its very pleasing to do that in the cold. Now yes you can drive over there, but are you willing to risk getting a $30 ticket. Ever since Stony Brook has lost tremendous amounts of funding and have been cutting back on everything, they have been giving out parking tickets, left, right, up down...from all sides you get bombarded.

Study areas
The HSC libary closes at 12:30 pm, while the undergad libiary in the Melivile Libary is open until 2pm. The people who really need to study late need to evacuate after 12:30pm. Its ridiculous. It gets very depressing looking at the towers every day through the windows of the library. There aren't enough computers for the students in HSC. In the library there is about 14 computers all of the medical, dental, and ALL the other health science students which include nurses, PT's, RC's...etc...
The computers are ALL old and arent updated... they have disk drives still! They are old IBM computers that constantly break down.
There is a separate small computer sinc site in HSC, which is next to the library...those computers are little bit better, but they are also very slow during the middle of the day when there is a lot o people there. Good luck trying to find a computer during the day...its almost impossible. Printing takes forever because people print out novels of notes! So you stand there fr 20 minutes waiting for your 2 pages to come out after someone finished printing 1000 page ebooks.

The living
Well if you decide to live on campus, Chapinin the Gaduate Quad next to the Hospital. There is also West Apartments and Shomberg, but that is all the way across the other side of campus, and it would be like a 30 minute walk to the hospital, and for dental school, forget it...you would have to take a bus because its in the middle of nowhere...its called the south campus (next to the university police department).
Chapin is the closet to the hospital. The housing is terrible...its low pay housing, about 700 for a single with all the works, cable, electricity and everything, and $400 for a double. If you are in dental or medical, get a single. Because housing is so cheap as opposed to off campus, where you would pay 700 to 800 just for the room without heat, electricity, cable or internet, they dont fix anything. If you have a leak or a clogged toilet they will take 2 week minimum to come to fix it. I have seen people to have holes in the walls between the window and the modeling and it becomes so cold during the winter. One poor guy and his wife, plugged the hole with news paper. The work crew came to fix it, saw the paper and said its looks fine to us and left.
If you want a heater because it is too cold, they barely have them to give out, and they are very stingy about it.
For dental school students...there is no way we can walk to the dental school from Chapin because the walk would entail walking to Nicols Rd (Rt. 97) and crossing it, dogging cars, and walking through the south entrance and finally getting to where the dental school vicinity. That should take about 20 - 30 minutes. Oh and I don't think there is a side walk to walk that way. Soooo you'll be treading on grass and the geese poop.
You can take a bus, but the bus is one way! Sooo the bus goes from Chapin, passes the hospital...does NOT stop at the hospital entrance (just to let you know)...enters into the undergrad side (west campus) and stops at the Student Activities Center (SAC) for a good 10 to 15 minutes). Along it way to the SAC it will stop at various other stops. Finally when its ready to leave the sac, it will go around the entire campus and than finally stop at the dental school bus stop. I would say its a 30 - 40 minute bus ride. Good luck. Oh yeah and the bus from Chapin is always packed.

If you have a car, I believe it costs $22 a month to park in the HSC garage. As dental school students you will have classes in both the dental school which is isolated from the world, and in HSC, because you also have classes with the medical school students in HSC.
There are plenty of more problems that I can list/explain, but I think this should do it for now. Just a terrible overall experience.

An entire website was published for this amazing school btw: Stonybrooksucks.com

And no, I did not apply to stony brook dental school, and no, I am not on the wait list. I would actually pay the extra hundred thousand to go to another school anywhere else. Just simply trying to help others from making a big mistake, provided they actually listen. I am not here to force you to make your decision. The chose is yours. I will not respond to any rebuttals to this post either, because I made my point and I don't care enough about this school to do so. Sorry.

Good Luck... hopes this helps persuade you all to come to this Fantastic University!

It is clear that the OP is waitlisted at Stony and wants to get off the waitlist by pursuading others to not come here so there is no competition lol. Good job! Everyone knows that Stony is one of the top dental schools and no one would decide not to come here because of your stupid rant. Anyone would die to attend Stony. Also, as a dental student, you would be spending most of your days studying. You go to dental school because you are very interested and inspired to become a dentist, not to party every single day that you're there.

Even if this is just your personal opinion, with no motives behind it whatsoever, I have talked to both medical and dental students at Stony Brook that love it there. No offense, but I'm gonna take the word of people I know and trust over that of some random on SDN who may or may not be trying to deter people from attending so that he or she can get off the waitlist.

Dental Man 123 I saw your post and had to respond, let me just say I feel your pain. Its amazing how everyone who has been a stony brook student feels the same way. Your description couldn't be more accurate and I laughed through most your entire post. The facade of the trees and birds, but inside the belly of the beast there are ticket monster renta cops, foreigners who cannot drive, and professors who couldn't give a ****. And the same company is responsible for all the dining on campus, thats why every dining facility has the same food. Yeah you have to drive everywhere, not that you wouldn't want to, because the campus is dead and creepy at night, any female should be terrified. And there is absolutely nothing to do, not a novel thing on the island. A bleak haze of depression courses through the entire university, feeding on the misery of students and drowning out their cries....Although i must admit the island's pizza and bagels are the best.

Before everyone believes the original poster. Lets take a moment to go back in SDN time. There used to be a SDN poster named "UDMHater" that posted how terrible U Detroit Mercy was and made up stories like the above and posted them. Well it turns out he was waitlisted at UDM... and it was his first choice. So he came on SDN to convine people to withdraw so he can get in.

He came back at the end of the cycle, he posted that he was accepted to UDM and said his plan succeeded because he got off the waitlist and into UDM.

Why else would someone waste their time writing such a long post as the OP?

PS didn't read your post, too long.

I only laugh when people make these posts as I saw the same thing last year and also this year already. It's ridiculous to think that this person is doing a favor to predents as they say they are. We go to the interviews, we see the school, and if need be there's usually a ton of actual students who go to the school that can answer questions, like facebook groups. Not some random SDNer who has 14 posts and is likely using that profile as a facade. Good luck poster in where every you get in.

Wang Center has great chinese food!!!

Read the first sentence, im an undergrad here. I dont plan on going here for dental school unless its the only place I get into. Not going to read the entire page long rant though.
There is ar eason we have consistantly be ranked always in the top 5 depressing school in the nation

Is it a great school? Yes.
Is it depressing? Yes.
Am I speaking for the dental school here? Not at all.
I can only speak of undergraduate and the bitch who runs the volunteer services at the dental clinic

Got that everyone? Don't go to SB for undergrad is the take home message of his post.

As far as the dental school goes, you'll get a wonderful dental education. Don't pass up the opportunity.

Some quick points:

1. We go to the undergrad campus like 0.001% of the entire 4 years if even... you get the idea.
2. The food at the d-school sucks but you can find your way off campus to places around the area... or bring your own lunch.
3. There's parking at south p-lot. It's less than half a mile from the school and there's a sidewalk to walk on all the way there. You don't have to cross any major roads.
4. You should have a laptop with you and thus won't need to use their computers.
5. Over 80% of us start out living off campus and by 2nd year I'd say 100% of the class was off campus. They offer Chapin and West apartments so that we can definitely find something for the first semester/year.
6. The buses leave from south p-lot and are express. They make their first stop at the back entrance of the dental school within 3 minutes. On the way back we are the last stop before p-lot. Again, 3 minutes. These buses run every 5-10 minutes during normal hours of the day. They don't run during undergrad breaks, which unfortunately does occur while we have school.
7. While a lot of oral bio and perio is research oriented, we still get all the clinical info that we need. I think some of it is overkill but there will be people in the class who want to learn it. Pretty much all the other classes are pure clinical.

Just because a few friends of yours had bad experiences at the dental school doesn't mean everyone else will. And if all you really have to go off of here are your experiences in UNDERGRAD, please realize how useless and unrelated they are.

By all means, dislike the undergrad and dental school. It's absolutely your right to have that opinion. Just don't come here typing useless info like this. Some people take this stuff seriously.

Yeah... sorry about her. She's awful.

You've volunteered at the dental clinic too? 🙁
Possibly the meanest lady ive ever met.

Edit:
Things ive gotten yelled at for:
1) Getting to the dental clinic early
2) Asking to speak with her
3) Having a purple lanyard for my staff ID
4) Friend who did it with me got yelled at for having according to her a "weird" name
5) Friend also got yelled at for having non black pants
6) I wasnt allowed to volunteer since I didnt have my lanyard (kinda expected this though)

I'm a 4th year at the d-school. I've had to work with her before. We had to do Give Kids a Smile Day with her for the past 3 years. I've also volunteered for a few outreaches the last year. I don't let her get to me. We've come to realize that if we all don't do the work because she's a b---h, she'll lighten up enough. For a bit.

I was actually supposed to do the smile thing last semester but couldnt deal working with her lol.

😱... holy crap. When I tell most of the undergrads I meet here that I'm a dental student, all they usually say to me is "damn, I heard you guys only take like 30 students a year. good job." So you must be like the most well informed non-stony-dental-applicant-stony-brook-student ever. Everything you said is true. At our school, we actually have to live in cheap apartments, eat cheap food, and study on weekends like we're dental students or something. Whats up with that?

If I was half as smart as you. I could have been at NYU living in my penthouse apartment overlooking the Hudson, dining at the best city restaurants every night, and party at the finest clubs every weekend. =(

omg
ive seen the apts before.
They are the definition of you get what you paid for.
Most depressing things ive ever seen. Im just happy im in the new building this year. (for undergrad)

That's Bakos. She was one of the best parts of my Stony Brook experience. Rough on the edges but squishy in the middle.

I did residency at Stony Brook and am grateful for the education, but think it's a terrible dental school for dental students. I think some of the residency programs are great.

If I may ask, why do you think it is a terrible dental school for dental students? thanks!

I talked to several dental students at stony brook recently, and this is basically what they had to say:
(Don't kill the messenger)

"I hate how the classes are integrated with the med school. We have to take classes like med neuro with the med students. It's just a lot of unnecessary competition and a lot of stress."
"People are very competitive and clicky. Too many gunners"
"I would much rather have gone to a private school"
"Ivy school is much better and worth it"

"As for the food around campus... its just as bad... SAC (student activities center) sucks. Resturants around campus are okay... nothing special... would rather be in the city and not in the middle of no-where."

"Professors really dont care for us... especially the medical school professors. Good luck with the exams, professors, and compeitive students who are all scheming unethical people."
