Hi all,
I am deciding between Stony Brook (OOS) and Maryland (IS). I am also an HPSP candidate so right now I'm not thinking of money as a factor. I would really appreciate any advice!

Stony Brook:
Small School -- get to know professors well, but also less options for friends/social life
Some integrated med school classes -- leads to high match rates but potentially more studying
Good clinical preparation
Suburban Location -- I don't particularly want to spend my 20's in the suburbs. NYC is a whole train ride away (at least an hour), so realistically I don't see myself going there often

Maryland:
Location -- Baltimore isn't the best city for many people, I've heard of students being afraid to walk outside at night. It's so close to home and I've been wanting to get away and try something new.
Medium class size -- more variety of social life options?
Good clinical preparation
Building looks newer and bigger

Does any school have special merits that I don't know about? Would any school open up more opportunities post-grad? Thanks so much!

Stony has the best outreach programs out of every school I interviewed at. You can go to Appalachia in WV, a Native American Reservation in SD, Madagascar, Chile, Jamaica and a few others. All places where people really need treatment.

You already answered your question, I think.

Wouldn't you feel miserable living 4 years in a place where you don't want to live...? Sounds like Maryland is a better option for you.

I have a classmate who literally refused to go to Maryland after attending John Hopkins cause the area is so bad. His family is from Maryland. At stony brook you have no fear of walking out late at night and getting mugged. The big city is a few hours away and people are literally paying 600k to go to the school there just to experience it.
Med school courses are easy and you will have plenty of downtime. Clinic at stony starts second half of second year giving you really good clinical experience.
Also you can attempt to date the med students if you care so much about social life. Or any of the undergrads. It’s a huge ass city of a campus. One of the graduating fourth years married one.

So if the only reason I'm going to dental school to earn my Mr. degree Stony is a good option because of med school babes? Any other schools with med curriculum for me to add to my application list? ;p
