Stony Brook or Tufts

Well, to be honest, if I got accepted to a state university in the WICHE program, I'd probably take it.
Stony Brook is an excellent school... there's not need to go to your Tufts interview unless you're seriously considering coughing up 350k+ for tuition.
I care about neither of these schools, so no bias from me, but perhaps he wants to go to school with 140 people rather than 38 and perhaps he wants to go to school in Boston rather than a very remote rural location.
From what I hear on these forums stony brook sound so much better than Tufts... especially in your situation with in-state tuition...
If I were you, I would attend the Tufts interview, and decide from there... It's a small amount of money in the larger scheme of things 🙂

I've been accepted to both and am having a really hard time deciding which school to attend. I think it's worth it to visit Tufts...

Damn did you discover the cure for AIDS or something? Mad acceptances

Either that, minority status, super legacy, bribery, a Rec Letter from the president/governor/senator, or a combination of the above.
haha, thanks. I wish I had, that would be awesome. I guess I interview well? work experience? luck of the irish?Damn did you discover the cure for AIDS or something? Mad acceptances

or none of the above. sorry to disappoint those considering these routes. Although they may work, I cannot personally testify to their success.Either that, minority status, super legacy, bribery, a Rec Letter from the president/governor/senator, or a combination of the above.

I'm pretty sure if you had a letter from the frikin el presidente you're in fo sho.
A personal letter, yes. a form letter, maybe.I'm pretty sure if you had a letter from the frikin el presidente you're in fo sho.
I just found out that I got accepted to Stony Brook, and I'm extremely excited. But I also have an interview with Tufts. Should I cancel my interview?
I would say lean towards Stony Brook, but definitely check out Tufts. There may be factors at Tufts that will make you overlook the pricetag, that's what happened to me. Congrats with Stony though, definitely one of the top schools in the country 🙂

Oh my gosh, would I go insane in a rural location with only 38 classmates... but hey, Im going to NYU... so clearly Im at the other end of the spectrum.
For me (this is just my opinion) I found in smaller classes had a higher gunner mentality. When people are competing against so few others, they stop sharing notes/study guides and helping people out. I just feel like the competitive atmosphere is heightened.... and that's not really my style.

this is not completely on topic but, i go to buffalo as an undergrad. and interviewed at buffalo and tufts. I got accepted to tufts but waitlisted at buffalo. I love tufts, my whole experience there was wonderful, and although I'll be in debt for a while, I secretly do not want to get into buffalo cus my parents are going to force me to go there due to the WAY CHEAPER tuition. So I think you should go to tufts and see everything for yourself. 🙂
For a lot of reasons, it seems a lot of the students are leaning towards Tufts, over a lot of other good schools, such as UMD. I would def. go to the interview...
One of the reasons for this recent phenomenon is that Tufts is completing the 5 new floors by December. I'm not saying the facility is as good as Maryland's, but at least now they are somewhat comparable. Expect the average DAT and GPA of Tufts to rise for the next ADEA book 😉

do they have any pictures to show of what it is supposed to look like? Or is it some surprise?
I have nothing but great things to say about each school.
Tufts Dean is an amazing person and really goes out of his way for you. You can tell he is very excited and proud of the program esp the clinical aspect.
+ with the upgrades and new clinics and implant clinic its not a bad gig.
But Stony Brook is elite as they come. You get your own chair own patients, classes with the med students. Pretty outstanding school.

go to Stonybrook. military isn't for everyone.

In a word, yes. That is unless you highly prefer a class that's more than 4.5 times the size of Stony Brook's (Tufts wants 175 this year, SB has around 38 I think), an urban living situation, and 4 times the tuition (if you're a NY resident). I don't have anything against Tufts; I was accepted there and it's a great school with a great program and reputation, but I would go to Stony Brook in a heartbeat.
However, it can't hurt to visit Tufts and do a comparison/contrast. That way you have no doubts about your decision.

yea just go to the interview, you might even like it there if you never visted there before, but being a resident of NY and my own bias towards stony i would of course pick it but like everyone above go to the interview

Stony Brook is a class of 40.
Go here.
We do well on boards and we start operative on patients as early as November of second year. Pretty cool if you ask me?
Oral Bio?

FYI, this thread is over 6 months old. The OP probably started his first round of exams in dental school already. He might be regretting taking yalls advice.

um stony brook is in a VERY REMOTE RURAL LOCATION???
are you smoking crack? its 50 minutes from manhattan and in the suburbs. Far far from anything considered rural. Stony brook is an excellent school and actually one of the top 3 most selective schools in the country due to its superb highly clinical education, small class size, low tuition, and great location. Living in boston would be nice but consider how many dental schools are in the Boston area and how that might limit the number of patients coming in to the clinic at tufts. Tufts competes with Harvard and BU for patients. SB competes with nobody and Long Island is VERY VERY populated. If u dont believe me take a short road trip during rush hour and see how long that takes.

do me a favor and tell that girl to have her head examined...
She's a very smart girl, she's in my gross anatomy lab group.
You really can't judge a school until you've visited, talked with students, and talked with the administration. The stats tell you very little. It's very easy to have a 21 DAT average and 3.7 GPA average when you have less than 40 seats per class AND you're dirt cheap (I'm lookin at you, Stony Brook). Penn having a 21/3.7 average with 120 seats and a $360K pricetag? That's commendable. But would that be the case if it weren't an Ivy? hmmm...
I wouldn't turn down any interviews; you never know until you visit. If money's ever an issue, take the $1 megabus or chinatown bus and stay at a motel or hostel or a friend's apartment.
