Stony brook students not ranked?

Anybody know?
To the OP: you could always call the school and ask. That might be a quicker way to get your info in this case, since I don't know how many Stony Brook students frequent SDN.

i tend to think its a good idea because it emphasizes cooperation over competition. my take on it is that we're all in the same boat and should act like a team. It sounds good to me, especially in a smaller class. I know uconn, columbia and harvard have moved this way. Just my opinion!

If we had rankings, people would be so aggressive and always talking about what rank everyone is. I'd literally puke to hear this info all day-every day from a bunch of competitve PITAs. The residencies directors are smart let them figure out how to separate and rank the unranked.

If you're interested in specializing it may be more difficult not being ranked. It's not uncommon for UCLA ortho applicants to apply to 20-30 programs. I'm sure it's hard enough for ortho programs to rank their interviewees. Without a class rank it likely becomes difficult to justify choosing a non-ranked student over a highly ranked student. As far as competitiveness in the class(I can only speak for my own school), dental school offers a fairly cooperative atmosphere. I'm sure there are a few gunners out there in the country, but I doubt they would change their ways in a non-ranked program.
in my experience, i think having class ranks leads to a LESS competetive environment. no one runs around spouting off their rank to everyone else, for one thing - its all dont ask dont tell. the reason i think there becomes less competition is that 90% of the class figures out pretty quick (by the end of 1st year) that they should just chill out and enjoy the ride. the top 10% or so also figure out pretty quick where they are and are left with lots of freedom from in-fighting etc. i am also lucky to have the top people in my class be uniformly modest and unselfish people - the annoying gunner types must have skipped our year for some reason maybe. i find that the students from nonranking schools tell me of major competition all 4 years because the students have no idea where they stand so like 30 people end up applying to ortho for example. its so hard to get out of your own door in that situation so you have to be very secretive and apply to like 30 schools. just my take.
