My interests/goals/information:
- Surgery
- Interest: Get an MBA/Entrepreneurship/open my own practice (not so much academia)
- My spouse works in NYC, and I would prefer to live with her, but I also want to position myself as competitively as possible to match into a strong specialty.
Stony Brook (partial scholarship + state grant so total COA: $210k - all loans):
Pros:
- More established, GREAT match list.
- More research opportunities + funding throughout my education.
- An amazing school, the students seem to really like it, and during the interview, I got a great vibe from the faculty. I feel like I will have great mentors.
- NBME
Cons:
- More expensive!!!!
- Live away from my spouse
- Far from the city
Hackensack (full tuition covered – total COA: $100k, but my spouse will cover most of the expenses, so I would likely only need to take out $10–20k in loans):
Pros:
- Will be able to live with my partner!!
- 3 + 1 program (Last year free to do research/away rotation/get mba…)
- Match well in NJ/NYC (I want to stay in NYC for residency if possible)
Cons:
- Step 1 and Step 2 taken at the same time (Stressful, I don’t think i will like that)
- Less established and lower ranked
- Clinical sites spread out – would need a car
- In house exam
- They haven't really matched anyone into a specialty I’m interested in (at least based on my research) - this is my biggest worries!
