Arent you a New York state resident? How does that make sense,then?
Stony Brook is a fantastic school with a well-established record of clinical excellence.
NYU has a smeared past but is working feverishly (with great success) to put its past in the past and build its reputation as a leader of dental education.
And props to you (or your dad) for making money a non-issue -- whatever your reason. Choose the school for you -- both very different programs.

Well, right now, Stony Brook attracts better qualified candidates--b/c its relatively inexpensive. But having lived in NY forever, and having applied numerous times to Stony for undergrad and grad, it's not a bad school--but it's in an awfully bad location. Place gets totally quiet during the weekend b/c everyone is desperate to leave.
NYU is in a very good location. It's relatively expensive and thus it steers away many students. But its facilities are much better and it's in the heart of NYC. NYU's patient population is also infinitely better than Stony's.

Secondly...STONY BROOK FOR SURE!!!! One of the best schools in the Nation..HANDS DOWN! From what I remember it is top 3 clinical in the nation...and probably 1/5 the price...plus 1/7 the class size....good luck
Stony is an awesome school and I'd go there before I went to NYU, location or not. And then I'd take the 250K that I saved and use it as a down payment on a trump condo. I'd rather be one of 40 vs one of 350.
Well, if you want to be a good clinicial then prestige doesn't really matter, does it? This is the last stop on the educational highway so there is no one left to impress with name.

And as far as the "state-school" stereotype, ask your dad what he thinks of UCLA, UCSF, UW, Oregon, Nebraska, or UConn. Not telling you where to go, but your parents are making a grossly misinformed generalization.

Buffalo interview went well. They said I should get a letter in about a week saying if I got accepted or not... The school is not bad, the people are awesome, the location sucks. I don't think I would go there, but it was worth the trip.
I told my parents they need to do more research about the schools as well. As I said, my dad is a dentist, he went to NYU, and he said his friend who has a practice on Long Island said that NYU grads are better clinicians.

Second, I am talking reputation among older dentists and normal street folk, who only know about dental school through word of mouth.
They hear NYU and they get a better impression than when they hear Stony Brook.

NYU's patient pool is much better than StonyBrook's. But Stony Brook currently has a better reputation than NYU. But it wasn't always this way. Years ago, Stony was dead last in terms of reputation and NYU was the place to go, even over Columbia (according to some of the old dentists I spoke to).
The general population, discounting dentists, still has the perception that NYUCD has a better reputation than Stony. Just look at NYU undergrad (top 35), Law (top 5), Business (top 15), Film (best in the nation) and med school rankings (top 40) (www.usnews.com) and NYU is by far the better institution.

Yeah, when non-dentites hear that I got into NYU they get all amazed,but when my dad's friends hear it,they arent as impressed(these are all columbia-ites though,so probably biased).

Hi everyone. I just want to put in my two cents about Stony Brook. First of all, I'd sell my left eye to get into NYU... or any school at this point. But I go to Stony Brook for undergrad and have worked extensively with the dental students, resident dentists, and professors here at their dental care center... and I have to tell you that everyone loves it. If feedback from past students is any indication, it's a great institution with very personal attention. And the campus is not that bad. It's very aesthetically pleasing, and there's a Long Island Railroad station right on campus to get into NYC in an hour and a half. It's a nice place...and the people are really nice. If you express interest in specializing, the faculty is super helpful and considerate and will help you get into the specialty.

Yep, Stony Brook isn't even ranked in many of these categories. Undergrad ranking is 98 compared to NYU's 32. . . NYU's Courant institution (for math) is also on par with MIT.
Yes, if you love nature, then you'll love Stony. Like Cornell and Binghamton, they are aesthetically pleasing. But if you are a city person, you'll hate Stony. One of my friends left a relative good school b/c he is a city person. Plus, even if you use the Long Island Railroad (LIRR), it's different from being actually in the City. Plus you'll need to pay for the LIRR ($5-9) + the subway ($2) each way. But I think the tuition difference could afford you those train rides
I hope you're kidding with this comparison. NYU is a great school but Stony Brook has one of the best reps in the country when it comes to training clinicians.

Awesome blanket statement, based on hearsay, nonetheless. I'm sure that your father's colleague has seen the work of all NYU and Stony grads for the past 10 years. Sheesh.
Nope, he hasn't. But he is friends with some of the biggest dentists in NYC and knows many of them intimately. I think word of mouth from dentists making a million plus in NYC is pretty good hearsay.
I hope this doesnt get turned into a "well MY daddy said that ____ is better and since WE live in a big fat mansion in westchester and drive fancy cars and he's a big park ave dentist,MY word is law" type deal🙄
Well I know several billionaires, they aren't dentists (because dentists dont make that much) and they can probably tell you that anyone graduating from either of these academic institutions are CHUMPS
They have more than your daddy's friends, making their ideas more correct than yours, your dad's or his mouth-cleaning buddies

I am just saying that dentists in NYC seem to give more respect to NYU than Stony Brook. If you have evidence to refute that, please provide it. If you just want to make fun of me, you can do that too, I don't mind because I am already into schools and that is all that matters 😉

congrats....
consider yourself very special to have been accepted at Stony Brook with a 3.3 GPA. not that it is low or bad but the cometition boosts the GPA average for the entering class....

Consider this... My class has 39 people. During our pre-clinical classes like operative we have 6 highly trained practicing dentists/instructors walking around helping us with anything we need. Take a visit to NYU and go check out one of their pre-clinical classes and see if you can even find an instructor. NYU is a great school don't get me wrong but when you have a class size that large it's going to be hard to get as much attention than if you're in a class of 39. I'm sure both schools turn out great dentists and not so great dentists but I would be willing to bet that the not so great ones from Stony Brook still received excellent clinical training; they just simply lacked in the manual dexterity department so it was their own fault not SB's.
