Hey guyz, im still debating between these two schools and was wondering what you guys thought about these schools?
just to help me out..what helped make your decision to go to either of these schools? I am a ny resident but i felt uconn was pretty good except not sure if its worth 40k extra..I also am not sure if i want to specialize or not. Any thoughts would greatly be appreciated!

Hurry up, SB wants the answer by the 31st.

This is true, but keep in mind that the deposit is refundable until March.

Anyway, choose the school you felt more comfortable at. I don't know much about UConn, but if you do a search, some people didn't have such great things to say (don't ask me what specifically; i don't remember the complaints). I'm not sure I want to specialize either, and you really shouldn't be at this point. That's why I love that SB students start treating in the beginning of their second year... more time for hands on experience and getting to know what you like doing!

ive had the same problem deciding between the two...

i went to both schools and check them out again, this time with much less stress and actually, the schools trying to sell themselves to me, not the other way around. if you have some time, i would recommend trying to see the schools again (i know uconn does an open house in early jan)...

as for me, im in state in ny but ive chosen uconn. both schools were fabulous, really.. and if you speak to the deans at both places, they only speak highly of both schools, and note, that they are both very similar. i guess its mostly a gut feeling. remember that whatever you may read on these boards will be undoubtly bias (in either a positive or negative direction).

as for hands on experience, i noted this to the schools and they made a point to remind me that if you look at the number of hours that you see patients, the schools are equal... so that shouldn't really be a deciding factor. both schools have all specialities, studies with med students, great comm services projects and research opportunities.

it doesn't seem like theres a tremendous difference between them... i mean, i guess location makes them different, if you're more comfortable in long island or connecticut...

good luck!

thanks for the input! I have sent in my money to SB already but will visit it again. I guess in my view, i saw that UConn was just much nicer inside almost hotel like but clinical facilities wise i know SB was better - had digital and paperless charting. i was wondering if you guys knew the deal w/ the residency program for NY..so after 4 yrs you have to do 1 yr either gpr or aegd? or could u take the nerbs anyway and avoid doing that?

Just to help you out, I'm giving my my scholarship for a full ride at UConn to go to Stony Brook because I liked it that much more.

Gotta do a few things to practice in NY (or some other select few states).

GPR or AEGD, 1 year.
Specialize and finish the program, 2-6 years depending on the program.
Work for a couple years in a state that does not require a 1+ year residency.

What do you do or your parents that you can afford to pass up a full ride?

Stony is better b/c the class size is smaller...You always want to pick the smaller class size if possible...

from what ive heard stony's class size ranges between 36-42 and uconn ranges between 38-45

Sorry guys...I thought Harvard and Stony were the only schools with 35 seats...I didn't know UConn had the same.

To the OP...if both schools have around the same number of seats then I would most likely go with the cheaper school! 😉

Stony never hits 40. I believe they have 40 available operatories, so they try to cap it at 39 max.

I didn't know it costs $30k/yr in living expenses. What would costs THAT much?

stony brook is great but i would not have given up a full ride at another good school, not to mention the advantage of pass/fail at uconn over letter-grading at stony!
