I have a c3.3 s3.1 (MD), s3.2 (DO) and have taken the mcat twice (27, then 30). Are my chances for DO solid? If I were to retake the mcat again and aim for a 33-34, would my chances at an MD school significantly increase or is it a better idea to stop now and focus solely on DO?

Your GPA is significantly below avg for MD programs, and having a great MCAT won't save that.

You're fine for DO right now. Go for it.

If you want an MD, you're best served with an SMP. Having a high MCAT performance doesn't mitigate a 3.1 sGPA.

Thanks for the replies. Are my chances good for some of the more competitive DO schools as well? Also, would applying to some MD schools be a complete waste of money in my case?

I have taken my MCAT last year and got a score of 30Q
My cumulative GPA is 3.3 and I shall be graduating this year with a bachelors degree in Biology and minor in Chemistry and Medical Anthropology.
My BPCM GPA is 3.2.

I have a lot of research experience in the last 4 years and have been published twice. I volunteer at the hospital and have shadowed doctors.

I know my GPA and MCAT score is low therefore perhaps I should not even try applying to any medical schools this year. I am planning on retaking my MCAT this year once again.

What I would like advise is that what should I do during this one year? Should I enroll for a masters program, or continue doing research which I am getting a good opportunity? I would like to apply to med schools next year in 2014. What would look good on my application? Also, since i would have graduated from college what recommendation letters would be good besides my research mentor? Would my undergrad instructors still be good to write the rec letters or would they? I am totally new to this process and am a first generation college student from my family. I would sincerely be grateful for any advise. I am a US citizen. Thanks

Dude stop posting this in multiple threads. Make your own.

It would be an uphill battle for sure. Definitely depends on which schools are in state for you as you may have a better shot at these. Regardless, it certainly wouldn't be a waste of time if you are always going to "wonder if".

Survivor DO

I think you're fine for the top DO programs. MD would indeed be a waste of money, unless there is something just drop-dead spectacular and/or unique about you and/or your history.
