Honestly, it seems that most professors are tenured and only care about their research. The lectures are rehearsed, uninspiring, and inefficient. The time spent walking to class, waiting for the lecturer to begin, and walking from class is doubly disheartening.

This semester, I've stopped attending classes entirely. I've just been reading from top-rated textbooks and researching the information online. As such, I'm able to synthesize information straight from the source and from many different experts in the field. Why would I spend any unnecessary time learning from a middle man who has to lecture and think on the spot when I could be learning from resources that have been revised many times over by active leaders in the field?

If that's what works, go for it. However, don't expect the professors who never see you outside test days to be of much help should you run into problems with your system.

What's the point of this thread, anyway?

0.4/10 - you said the lectures are "rehearsed" in first paragraph, but then you said professors "lecture and think on the spot" in the second paragraph. Good job contradicting yourself.

A problem you may run into is that you might need LOR's from some of these professors. If they never see your face that could really hurt you.

Sucks to suck to be at a college with below average teaching then

Also, cool story bro

Yup, just saw posting history

It really depended on the class for me. My biology prof would essentially recap the textbook. I found it better to just read the textbook and quickly skim through the powerpoints to see what was the most important takeaway. However, my chemistry professor would often go on tangents. He would lecture on new studies and things that weren't discussed at all in the textbook. If you didn't go to lecture it was impossible to do well. One of his colleagues is a prominent thermochemistry researcher. Our thermo section was really fleshed out and his colleague guest lectured a few times.

Some people do learn better outside of class. If you can master the material through your own work then good for you. I still watch lectures through podcasting at 1.5x speed, save time by not having to drive 30 minutes to class, and learn the material just as well. Other people need the structure of going to class, being there in person, and get too distracted to watch the lectures online, so that is works best for them. I'm glad you found a more effective study strategy OP, but why poo-poo the way other people learn?

Also you're probably better off just going to those professors office hours and talking one on one if you want a LOR versus just showing up to class.
