Hello Everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any opinion or advice you may be able to offer.

I am currently taking my prerequisite classes at a local 4yr college and have been receiving all As. My bachelor's degree, however, I received over 10 years ago with an approximate 2.3 cum GPA. I am unsure how my overall cum in a non science major (business) will factor into my admission chances given how long it has been.

What I am finding is that my science cum is very competitive 4.0 recent/ 3.75 cum so far ( I had a D from 16 or 17 years ago), but my overall cum is much lower than required.

Should I apply as is? Would I need to do a master's program? Would I need to "start over" with a new bachelor's degree from a new school? Would the upswing be enough?

Thank you,

D

I don't think your situation is so strange. There are several people on here who have returned to school after years off. Do your best to build a strong record of what you are capable now and get involved with shadowing and volunteering. Show that you are serious and I think you have a decent chance. It won't be easy, but admissions folk do recognize that you are not the same person now that you were 10+ years ago after all that effort.

I graduated with a 2.7 and a B.A. in Psychology over 10 years ago. Also, my first 2-3 semesters as an engineering student left me with 9 hours of F, 4 hours of C, etc. A masters degree in the sciences didn't seem like it would be easy to get into with all that so I went with the "start over" route. I just completed three years of undergrad and earned a B.S. in Molecular Biosciences. All A's. So far I have one interview and landed the best job I've ever had while I am waiting.

Go for it. If you think you can get into an interesting masters program, I would do that. On a side note, one of the dentists I shadowed started with a business degree and came back after a few years. Good luck.
