OK, just returned from a nephro fellowship interview. Got asked this one:

What specialty makes you cringe the most?

You are going into nephro? I thought you were a surgery attending. 😕

Really, you think??? I could swear there is some room down by the morgue somewhere in every hospital where some of these very "beings" are spawned.

My answer was at first, well, no specialty really makes me cringe. But the interviewer persisted, saying, "Well, what specialty do you dislike the most? Which one do you dread getting admissions for?" So I said, "I don't know, cardiology, I guess." The truth is, I don't really dislike it. It just doesn't interest me as much as the other fields of medicine. The interviewer then said, to my chagrin, "There's a lot of cardiology in nephrology." 🙁

Well, for what its worth, I'm still interested in nephro. Never got bored reading about it.

Meh. The truth is regardless of what you'd answered that interviewer would have made the same comment.

"Derm? Well there's a lot of derm in Nephrology. Renal patients have skin. Sometimes extra skin. Sometimes they get purpura, or necrobiosis lipoidica or granulomas. How can you not be interested in the largest organ a patient has?"

The way I was taught on Nephrology "the purpose of the heart is to pump blood to the kidneys"

So naturally I said that on Cardiology to which the reply was "No no no, you have it all wrong, the purpose of the kidneys is to cleanse blood for the heart."


My interview question:

Interviewer: So you taught skydiving huh?
Me: Yes sir, it is a lot of fun
Interviewer: Ever piss yourself?
Me: Not that I know of
Interviewer: You're nuts, what else should we know?

You're right. I should have said, "Well, to tell you the truth, there is no subspecialty of internal medicine that I dislike. I welcome admissions from every subspecialty."

i lead a boring life. "tell me about yourself." or "do you have any questions for me" is about the only things i've ever heard. i study so hard on what to say and that is all i get lol. which is a good thing. can't go wrong with those.

(but since I always viewed the Renal staff as amongst the brightest in the hospital *on average*, probably the latter)

Please don't mistake my comments above as implying you answered the question wrong. On the contrary, I'm not sure there is a right or wrong answer.

Any way you spin it, it either sounds like you're complaining or boasting (a la, "I hate the admissions that come in multiples because I feel that despite being so detailed oriented and making sure every test/lab/study/consult is ordered, that I have somehow not done the best for the patient.")

Hey, no big deal. I wasn't even serious when I asked how you would answer, hence the smilie emoticon.

Anyway, my guess is that it was probably more a stress interview-type question that the interviewer threw out, just to see if he could catch me off-guard. Its not so much the answer that you give to the interviewer, its more about how you handle yourself when the interviewer decides to put a little pressure on you.

that's got to be a baited question if he persisted like that. lol. to determine whether you would make something up or persist in ur previous answer. maybe it was just to put you in a mess and see if you can dig yourself out of it or how you react, lol....

Some of those numbers are under calculated; I know that DrMom and bananaface lost some posts during a VB revision; I don't think they were ever credited back. But some of those numbers are impressive given a few of the users joined way after me.
