How do you guys manage stress? I have been stressed out a lot lately for almost a month (for reasons I won't mention here). It made it harder to focus, concentrate, etc and I am just starting to get over it. I know this thread isn't used for medical advice, but can chronic stress permanently damage your brain? I know that may sound like an outrageous question, but in my textbook it did mention prolonged stress can cause a reduction in the hippocampus, as well as make neurons more difficult to communicate, but it never mentioned whether if it was reversible. Sorry if I'm sounding paranoid, but when you're in the med field and you read about certain conditions it can make you in some ways a hypochondriac haha.

I used to get stressed a lot about all the schoolwork I have to do and ECs and it just felt too much to handle. To manage, I started a habit of actually writing things down that I need to and making a schedule. Then instead of stress about a million things to do, I just need to do one thing. I tell myself to take it one day/ midterm at a time. I started going to the gym and just finding reasons to be happy and realize not to worry about small details. I stopped only studying and started hanging out with friends, going out, etc. There's only so much you can control - no point in worrying about stuff that you can't do anything about.

I think the main thing you should do is find the source of your stress, and make a plan to attack it.

Also, watching funny videos and cute dogs on YouTube is a great way to end a long day.

I became very stressed this year as well. Extremely stressed to the point where I now have gray hairs on my head. I would take some time out for yourself and do what ever you enjoy
 
Second @GCS-15. "Finding your source of stress and attack it" is probably the best way to deal with stress. Sports and outdoor activities also really help. For me, listening to music helps too. If you are stressed out about some difficult work/school things, try doing what you are the most afraid to do, and do one thing at a time. Break big objectives into small tasks. Take breaks.

Practice mindfulness techniques.

Go to the gym, or a run.

Pet a dog or cat.
 
I am currently very stressed owing to a couple classmates. One of them is married with young kids, and the other has an SO. From what we have been seeing, our class as a whole has reason to believe that these two people are having an affair, and it has been happening for a few months now. Everyone has been talking about it behind their back. Now, I know it has nothing to do with me, but it goes 100% against my conscience. It's disgusting just to think that I am in the same class as these two, and worse when I see them in mandatory events. So what do I do?
Absolutely nothing. This has no effect on you, and any action you take to change the lives of these acquaintances would be either useless or harmful. A lot of people do bad things and if you can't recognize that someone else's affair is not under your control, I really don't know how you can get through the day.

You get over it because its not your life and has no effect on you.

Its a lot less painful to climb down from your high horse than to fall from it.
