Trying to plan out the next few years of my studies... and it's not fun so far...

I'm entering a postbacc in summer (general chem I and II) and will be completing most all of my prereqs (physics I and II, orgo I and II, bio I) minus Bio II and probably an Orgo lab which I will take over the summer after hopefully applying.

When does this leave any time for studying MCAT... or will I not need to study as much as I will need to practice with exams, since the material will be fresh in my mind, hopefully? I want to take an April/May MCAT - my courses finish at the beginning of May - or I could take a June MCAT.

I seriously want to aim for having my applications complete by summer 2011, because if not, I will have to wait until Fall 2013 to even begin Med School. My worries are preparing for MCAT, and still having time throughout the year to get enough shadowing/volunteering completed.

As of now I only volunteer in my local ER (4 hrs a week since December), since I just recently decided to go in to medicine. I plan on continuing this, and adding some shadowing. I know I probably need more... although I have MANY additional volunteer experiences that aren't medicine-related, and several leadership positions from my undergrad experience on campus.

I am probably freaking out about nothing, but I am so stressed... no one really has to respond, I just needed to vent... but if anyone has suggestions/wants to share past experiences, please do...

I'm not usually this bothered by stress 🙁

Something to try and keep in mind that its better to go slower and get As than to rush through and gets Bs. They won't help your app.

You can build yourself a really great application with time and planning. Taking 1.5/2 yrs to do the prereqs isn't a bad thing and then in your "glide" yr u you can get a job to try and earn some cash before starting med school.

My personal opinion:

Tens of thousands of people, including myself, have done what you're describing (+ that extra orgo lab and Bio II). It is possible, though indeed quite stressful. Get used to it -- that's medicine.

You won't have much free time in the spring, but it's only for 2-3 months.

Thank you both for your comments... puts things in perspective... now really is not the time to be doubting myself. I know I'm capable of handling it and doing well... just needed some words of encouragement, I guess. I appreciate it... thanks again 🙂
