Please tell me one reason that doctors can't / don't strike?

this is why nurses consistently get paid more for their training than we do.

we could bring the system to its knees if doctors took a single day off....

The pediatric specialists are the ones who are abused the most but would never strike. We don’t have anything to strike over. We can sit in a tiny office, no staff, and see 3-4 med mgmt patients an hour and make $500/hr.

Kaiser docs may disagree

Doctors can strike but first we have to form a collective bargaining unit. Labor law requires that those units be organized around a specific employer with some exceptions.

One exception is professional athletes, writers, and actors. Those bargaining units organize principally around working conditions and not compensation. Both groups concede that team owners, production companies, and studio/theatre owners can pay employees a premium based upon talent/merit, but they insist on certain working conditions as s floor--a "standard contract"--for all workers.

Physicians can do this too. Make large employers agree to a "standard contract" that stipulates termination, grievance, non-restraint of trade, pension/retirement, staffing, support, etc. Working conditions.

Ronald Reagan was a card carrying member and President of the Screen Actors Guild. He also opposed socialized, corporate medicine. Be smart; win one for The Gipper.

most docs have been in a "me first" environment since high school. Weren't most of you "gunners". Most students that end up being doctors did all they could to beat their cohorts for the best grades, best letters of recommendations, best performances in extracurricular activities, etc etc etc.
It is individualism that makes someone usually rise to the level to get accepted to med school. This attitude persists even as most docs become attendings often untrustful of their colleagues even though on the surface the relationships may seem cordial

the other problem is that the current system basically puts doctors at war with each other for the small piece of the health care dollars pie. Specialities competes against other specialities and denigrating them to elevate themselves to get that dollar. Also docs in the same specialities competing and denouncing each other to secure that small piece of the pie. It's even worse now with social media

this is why there will be no lech walesa solidarity movement amongst doctors

This is 100% correct. Compared to almost everyone else in the country and the world we really have nothing to complain about.

This is 100% correct too. It kind of creates a toxic environment. I find much more camaraderie with my blue-collar friends and for the most part, prefer hanging out with these guys.

Good use of Lech Walesa.
