It's quite sad, but I am certain that a rather large portion of pre-med students would agree to the final request of the surgeon for a good rec letter. I hate to think of the things people would do for an acceptance.

Hmm I think honestly for an acceptance letter. Pre-meds would probably sleep with everyone on the adcom for their particular school... twice. Though can you say you wouldn't do crazy things for an acceptance?
