I'm a 2nd semester sophomore double majoring now in Biology and a foreign language. My cGPA right now is a 2.94 and my sGPA is a 2.35 (i know...). It has taken me this long in my college career to realize what I've been doing wrong with time management and poor studying. This semester has been alright grade-wise, but I feel like I implemeted my new studying strategies too late in the semester to really make a significant impact.

If I were to continue to double major, I would have to take another semester to complete my degree so that I could study abroad. And then I would probably need to take a year or two to do a SMP or post bac (depending on if I can get my my grades high enough at that point).

I feel like I'm just rambling at this point, but I'm so lost right now. Everyone around me has their stuff together, and I'm just now getting my life together.

I made an appt. to speak with a premed advisor, but I dont even know how helpful they'll be. Honestly, how realistic is my shot at med school?

My immediate thought was: do you need to double major? Is that the only thing that would make you happy? That might be causing unnecessary stress. It might behoove you to only focus on one of those majors so that you can do one thing fully right instead of two things half-right.

You'll definitely need to do some grade repair before applying to medical school, but I think it's definitely possible. There are several SDN members who have brought up their GPA from that low or lower; maybe some of them will chime in.

Also consider grade replacement for osteopathic schools! That would probably require taking less classes, as your poor grades could be replaced once they were retaken and done well. This is opposed to the AMCAS' policy, which doesn't allow for grade replacement. Keep that in mind when thinking about your next steps as well.

Good luck OP!!

Assuming you have taken exactly half the credits you will take for a degree, the max you cGPA you could get would be a 3.47 and a sGPA of 3.175. However, that means you would be applying after senior year and after you earned your degree. Most people like to apply during junior year, which would mean your GPA could be a 3.29 and a sGPA of 2.9.

Both of those GPAs are low and would require a 4.0 for every class. More than likely you can't do this (given your past grades in the lower difficulty classes and now you require high grades in the more difficult 400 level classes), and your GPAs will be lower than what I calculated above. Given this, I think MD may not be a realistic chance right out of college. You may have to go for a SMP.

On the contrary, you could retake classes and apply to DO. This would result in a higher GPA and may be cheaper/more time efficient that getting a masters.

You have plenty of time to recover before you apply to Medical school. The misconception is that all Medical school matriculants never got any B's, C's, D's and even F's in undergrad. The fact of the matter is they did and they were able to recover. You'll be fine Good Luck
