I apologize in advance if this topic has been addressed in any previous threads.

I am currently seeking to do some ophtho research the summer after my first year of med school. I'm an osteopathic medical student at a rural program with NO ophthalmology faculty/staff/researchers/hospitals. There isn't a single residency program for at least 200 miles. Nearly all of the DO programs and some allo programs inquiring about available research opportunities. None of the programs have returned any of my calls or emails. I can't find any online postings, and most programs indicate their research opportunities are only for their own current med students. Needless to say... this is borderline maddening.

I'm a good student, worked as an ophthalmic tech for over a year, and even have some decent non-academic contacts. I am already prepared to work my tail off for rank and board scores, but this research is looming over me. It (and a hopeful publication or two) is the missing piece here.

Is anyone aware of any summer ophtho research programs post-year 1 that are not restricted to students of a particular school?

If not, what are some good suggestions as to alternative research or supplemental activities/experiences that could fill this critical gap in my potential resume? Gen Surg research? Neuro? Should I try to arrange some sort of work study with a private practice ophthalmologist? Thanks, in advance. I'm sure this is coming off as fairly dramatic, but I've wanted this for so long now and don't want to miss my opportunity for not being a top applicant. Feel free to respond here or PM me!

Regards...

Talk to your Dean. The osteopathic community is a small one...and he may know of somebody.

Call up (not an email) the head of the ophthalmology departments of the larger schools... PCOM, MSU, etc. Even if you fail, getting your name out there... letting them know that you want to do ophthalmology... can't hurt. Even better, call up/email the various attendings who are doing research that sounds interesting to you!

Also, contact http://www.aocoohns.org/ Ask for help!

What about volunteering with Unite for Sight?

Finally, contact local ophthalmologists and simply ask! You never know. You could also look at the list on SFMatch for both ophthalmology residency and fellowships. The fellowships are not always University-affiliated, but still many do research.

Thanks. I've been doing alot of that, but I will keep pushing!
