Quick question... I have read other posts saying cliffs is about right for taxonomy questions on the dat. However, I feel it is hard to retain all the phylums. They seem to get jumbled up all the time... Does anyone have any strategy that worked for them in tackling taxonomy??

Thanks

Yeah,

I think BB is best for All that.
Honestly, Cliffs is seems too detailed and all over the place.
BB groups groups them well and is the most you should need to know.

cliffs and princeton worked for me. I was just like this when i started studying bio. I think its just a matter or reinforcement and cramming it in again and again. I cant say I am perfect at it yet but I certainly answer the questions better.

I made my own chart from the cliffs book with additional info from princeton. They also have tables in there which were helpful

No trust me Cliffs is just right in my opinion. Kaplan lacks alot. What I did was used Cliffs and made my own notes that were organized and condensed. Got rid of the wordy statements on the phylum. Then whenever I reviewed my notes, I studied the phylum stuff from it. If you review it several times, it will eventually stick. Make your own notes and organize them the way that you feel comfortable bc that is the best way to memorize it.

Thanks... That is encouraging. I have my own notes basically bullet pointing cliffs. It just seems that I can memorize them do it well one day but If I dont review it for 3 days they are gone. I have two weeks so I will just keep doin it over and over again. It sounds like I am not the only one with this problem(if you can call it that).

Yes memorizing taxonomy was a problem for me. But once you review it intensely for 3-4 times, it will stick. What works for me is to review it the day before or day of the exam bc it is fresh and it sticks. But make sure it is organized in a way you feel comfortable.

I found it easier to learn by organizing it from simple to complex (Porifera to Chordata), then marking where new things appear (Example: Everything from Mollusca and up has a circulatory system, everything below that has no circulatory system). Kind of like the table in Cliffs.

More specific features of each phylum I learned with repeated memorization. No real way around it I guess 😛
