Student Hosting --> Reflects on Admission Chances?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
does staying with a student host have any consequence on your chances of an acceptance after an interview?

(i prefer to stay at a hotel)

I have heard the growing consensus say... "No, it doesn't matter if you stay with a student host"... but... getting an inside scoop on the school is super nice.

No, unless you're crazy or violent or something.

How do you set up to stay with a student host? School specific discussions and ask or call the school to put you in touch with students who volunteered to do so?

I never stayed at a student host during interviews and was at accepted at 3/4 of my interview schools fwiw.

That's what I was getting at. I'm just saying it's nice to get an inside scoop on the school outside the ppt and free lunch.

hahahaha

Would you sleep on a couch at a student hosts apartment?

In 10 years I have never heard a report back from a student host. Staying with a student host neither helps nor hurts.

On the other hand, if you can't afford a hotel and the alternative is to take a red eye so that you don't have to pay for a hotel room and can be in town in the morning, take the student host option. Trust me on this one -- I've seen the alternative and it is not pretty.

It's always good to save money and ask the student "what's the worst part about this school?"

staying with a host is just all about saving money. and sometimes you might also get dinner, breakfast and advice. win win win

This. I stayed with a host for the majority of my interviews. You get free or cheap lodging, usually somefood, advice, and a good feel for the school and the students. (With pretty much all my hosts, we hung out with other students too).

And I say this even though I LOVE staying in hotels by myself.

If you do something really bad, the host can mention it to the school. I have also heard of hosts writing nice letters on behalf of the applicant that stayed with them, but it's really rare. Overall, hotel will be fine. You'll get a chance to ask all your questions during your interview day, both on and off the record.

I don't have a problem with this, especially since I've birthed way bigger things in front rooms full of people.

What on earth would I do in a hotel by myself? I get enough free hotel stays with the airlines and unforeseen layovers. I hate hotels 😎

I have been a student host twice for interviewees. The first thing I told both of them was to not worry I have absolutely no say in their acceptance or not. I wouldn't even know who to tell if the student I was hosting was super awesome or super not awesome.

I do it because it counts in a round-about way for credit, it's nice to get a little gift, I know how nervous I was in that situation and I hope to assuage some of those fears, and frankly it's neat to meet new and interesting people.

My student host kept me awake until 3am and I had just flown from pacific to eastern time zone. The interview wasn't as awesome as I would have liked. This was the first and last time I ever stayed with a student host.

Pay it forward! The student you're hosting now could be the chief of your cardiology department someday!

I wonder if the nice letters actually make any difference. I know I did it once or twice in UG and the faculty seemed to appreciate the feedback from a student they knew. That said, I don't know how much of an impact it really had. (One student got a full-ride scholarship after such a letter but who knows whether my letter had any real effect on that.)
