Hello Everybody,

I recently decided that I love anesthesia.

Reading some of the recent forums about the potentially negative aspects of entering into anesthesia due to CRNA's and their increasing momentum makes me a bit hesitant. I think I should be prepared for reality before jumping in headfirst.

If somebody could comment on two things...

1. Will there be (or are there currently) plenty of job opportunities in or around major cities after completing residency? Wide open market or extremely competitive due to increasing numbers of CRNA's?

2. What should those planning to enter the field of anesthesia be prepared to expect in terms of salary 5-10 years down the road?

Thank you very much!

The answers to these questions are frankly impossible to know.

1) My understanding is that it is not a wide open market open even now. But the competition is still among anesthesiologists. CRNAs and anesthesiologists are not competing for jobs at this time, especially in major cities. Its not the easiest to find a job in places like NYC as its fairly saturated and many older anesthesiologists have had to work for extra time due to the economy.

There are obvious ways around this though. Go to a residency known nationally or in the region you want to work, and expect to follow it up with a fellowship. These will make you much more appealing.

2) Also impossible to know. The 'average' most likely scenario has anesthesiologists doing quite well, but definitely making less money.
