Do you think this cycle (25-26) be even more competitive now since the new rules for grad plus loans takes effect July 2026? @Goro
What are your thoughts on programs that start june 30? My school changed the academic calendar this year with orientation starting june 25th and classes starting june 30... any possibility the next group of first years will somehow be able to circumvent this cut-off due to this change?25-26 cycle will be the first cycle TO BE affected. class of 2029, 24-25 cycle, is the last class that gets the grad plus loans because they start before (well before) june 30th, 2026. the academic year according to the goverment ends june 30th every year and begins july 1. for all intents and purposes, the 25-26 cycle starts classes after july 1, 2026, meaning the new changes are in effect when you begin school meaning you get the short end of the stick. so no, if you're talking about competetiveness due to these new changes, if anything i would imagine it would be less competetive. each cycle gets slightly more competetive so they honestly may just offset each other.
People are saying schools can move up start dates to June. Is that possible?25-26 cycle will be the first cycle TO BE affected. class of 2029, 24-25 cycle, is the last class that gets the grad plus loans because they start before (well before) june 30th, 2026. the academic year according to the goverment ends june 30th every year and begins july 1. for all intents and purposes, the 25-26 cycle starts classes after july 1, 2026, meaning the new changes are in effect when you begin school meaning you get the short end of the stick. so no, if you're talking about competetiveness due to these new changes, if anything i would imagine it would be less competetive. each cycle gets slightly more competetive so they honestly may just offset each other.
Thanks! I’m just worried if this was possible this cycle could be insanely competitive hahalet me first clarify that i am no expert on this, and admin who do this for a living and have to be aware of things like this likely know better than us, especially me.
if they're saying it's possible, my suggestion would be to call financial aid and confirm with them. if they say starting before july 1 will result in loans being available as they are now, then okay. i would try and call someone from the other side (government) to verify with them. if all checks out i think it's reasonable to assume that it might be okay.
my only concern is that new rates and all that stuff refreshes july 1. even if you're starting before then, you need to have grad plus loans taken out BEFORE then in order to qualify for continual use of them. same applies to class of 2029. say they pay for their entire year without taking loans as an M1, they wouldn't be able to take out grad plus loans for M2 since even though they started their program prior to the end date, they didn't take out a loan. so just be sure that you can get a grad plus loan out before july 1, 2026, or else it won't really matter when you start.
assuming it's possible: only at schools that move their start dates to june. doubt most will do that, but i guess we'll see. Thanks! I’m just worried if this was possible this cycle could be insanely competitive haha
