I was hoping that a thread could start out that would list dental schools and what kind of students they prefer.

1. Schools (non-private) that are likely to accept out of state students more than other dental schools?

2. School that doesnt care about DAT as much as GPA, or vice versa?

3. School that really cares about volunteer work, and extracurricular activities.

4. anything else?...

For #1 - Maryland, Louisville, OSU, Connecticut, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Buffalo, Pitt, VCU

Good luck with #3, not too many (if any) of those exist.

i may be reading into gavin's post a little too much... arizona seems to have a large emphasis on volunteer work and serving the surrounding area. this does not in any way mean that gpa/dat are not taking into consideration. =)

perhaps gavin can elaborate as he sits in class!

To endposse: Yes, Arizona would fit into catergory 3. That is, lots of service, non-academic activities, and unique volunteering, can completely override a shoddy DAT scores, as well as sub-par grades.

GPA and DAT still count, but they WILL take a person with an 18/3.2 and service (or leadership) over somebody with a 22/3.9 and minimal Extra-curricular stuff. My opinion on that, at least.

To jaap: Listing Iowa in that catergory simply isn't fair. They DON'T take many out-of-state candidates, and those they do are top-notch. Iowa may very well be the most difficult school to gain admittance to, given the circumstance.

Are you sure about Iowa and OSU? 😕

critterbug his post doesn't make too much sense

2001 Entering class:

Iowa-
instate: 57 out: 17

Ohio State-
instate:83 out: 21

That being said - Iowa is probably the most difficult on the list I gave.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 21 is a very large number compared to what OSU has taken in the past.

And PURELY heresay, but I have heard that they wouldnt be taking that many in the coming years. Once again, I heard that from somebody else so I have no clue how valid it is.

About 80% of those out-of-staters that Ohio State takes are from BYU, to shed some light on the subject.

So those numbers are a bit deceiving if just looked at without any background.

If you went to undergrad at BYU, you have a good shot at Ohio State. If not, you have a lessened chance.

what's so special about BYU ? Why so many schools pick BYU's students over other schools ? I checked their website but found nothing much.

Although this could never be explicitly stated, many adcoms have found that young Mormon men tend to be more responsible and better students than other applicants who are the same age. It also looks good that most students at BYU have spent 2 full yrs. in a foreign country doing nothing but volunteer/missionary work. Many speak multiple languages fluently. Basically adcoms value the same qualities that are emphasized by Mormon culture.
