studentdoc.com's GPA/MCAT "evaluation"

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I dont think it is very accurate, because according to it, the only schools I am not competitive at are Baylor and stanford.

EXCELLENT QUESTION!!! looking forward to responses.

I think it pretty much does what you could do with a glance at the MSAR: it tells you if you are in the ballpark of the school's averages. So many other factors go into the decision, though, that having that search say you are "competitive" for a given school probably just means that your scores will not exclude you from consideration.

I sure hope it's wrong. I'm only green for a few non-DO schools.

I don't think it really means that much. Two schools that I was barely competitive at, according to that website, gave me an interview (boston and uvm had me at about -2.0 to -3.0). Whereas two schools I was much more competitive at (Penn State and Wake) are a hold and a rejection (+0.5 and -.24). This website just propogates they myth that it is all about the numbers, when it is about much more and is very school specific.

I wouldn't based my applications on this. It's like reading the MSAR. There are intangibles that these stats don't take into account. For example, Mayo comes up red when I enter my stats, but I got an interview there (granted, it's not an acceptance, but still). I think that some schools that value "fit" more highly than stats may be a little more flexible than the color scheme displays. So, like anything, take this with a grain of salt. Just because your dream school doesn't come up green or blue doesn't mean it's a lost cause.

Yeah it isn't very accurate...it said there were only 3 schools i wasn't competitive at...it very much undercuts the importance of GPA in it's scoring system. I'm not saying i've been having much trouble in this process, but i mean, it considers me competitive at UCs. Honestly? And that's without factoring in ECs, which i feel are my strong point. I wouldn't make the cut to get a secondary though at some of the schools it called me "competitive" at. And i was rejected from a school it called me very competitive at.

Well... Since it gave me a big fat "negative" at the school that interviewed and accepted me, I would say that it is not very accurate.

You can't quantify an application with an MCAT score and a GPA...

I got ignored my UT San Antonio but got an interview an Baylor. I wouldn't bother with this site.

The problem with the website is that it uses historical data to create the averages for each medical school. Unfortunately, medical school has become more competitive over the last 10 years.
