Hi! I was wondering how beneficial it was/is to have a masters degree when reapplying to dental school. I know it depends on the individual applicant and their stats but basically I'm just trying to get a feel for the success rate of getting masters degree then getting accepted to dental school.

If any current dental students are out there that did this track I'd really appreciate your advice.

I guess my biggest fear is that I get a Masters degree and I still don't get an acceptance 🙁

If you feel that your GPA is the only thing keeping you out of dental school, a masters is probably for you. As far as the success at getting accepted: I have a few friends who went the masters route. I go to Midwestern, and that's where they did the masters program. They told me that every pre-dental student who did the masters there is currently attending dental school (including 4 or 5 at Midwestern, and others that went elsewhere). Basically, if your GPA is the issue, getting a masters works (assuming that YOU put in the effort).

^ Agreed.

Simply completing a masters will not get you in. It's getting that >3.85 GPA in the masters that will increase your chances. It's all about what your cumulative GPA comes out to be when you combine your undergrad and your grad GPA (with credits weighted of course)

Thanks to both of you! Yea, my low undergrad GPA is what's keeping me from getting into dental school and I'm currently in a Masters program. Haven't received any grades yet but I should do well because I'm putting in ALL of my time and effort and I know this is most likely my only way of getting in - I have tons of extra curriculars, volunteerism, work experience for almost 5 years, great LORs, etc, just need that high GPA (and equally important a great DAT score!)

Thanks for the positive feedback =)

No problem, and best of luck!

Even if you complete a masters program, some schools will look at your cumulative GPA. If its not where they want it, then it won't help much in terms of how they look at your GPA. A school like that is Case Western. Other schools however, will look at your masters GPA and disregard your undergrad and cumulative GPA. A school that I know does that is Ohio State.

That is just from my experience this cycle and calling both the schools I mentioned.

I did see your thread Doc, I was just looking for more of a # of master degree applicants vs # of master degree acceptances kind of statistics. Thanks for all of your help!

I've heard conflicting issues about combining of the GPA - so does AADSAS combine your undergrad and graduate GPAs into one? Or do the schools do this on their own?

AADSAS does. It's up to the schools which ones they look at.

My advice: just focus on your combined GPA since MOST schools will look at that.

AADSAS will have a separate undergrad GPA, grad GPA, and a combined GPA for schools to view. Which one a school places more emphasis on is a function of the school itself.

Okay gotcha! Thanks for clearing that up!
