My wife asked me...forced...threatened me otherwise🙂 to know how your spouse copes with the long hours of school and if there are any organizations at the schools for spouses? What tips would they share? And furthermore did your spouse attend the interview with you? I had friends in dentistry that took their spouse with them-is this acceptable(I read a similar post about parents)? Anyhoot I'll be back with all y'all Monday afternoon.

I took my fiancé (now spouse) to the interview. I think that it is very important b/c they have equal say in the choice.

How I deal w/ spouse and family is I make time of them. I schedule school like a job. 8-5 M-F and some Saturdays. That leaves the nights and Sunday's for the family.

It is important to realize that school will not just be a sacrifice for you. It will be a sacrifice that the whole family has to be willing to make. If you go into it with that attitude, you will do fine. The hours put into your education largely depend on what type of student you are. Everybody has to work hard but some have to work harder than others merely to produce the same result. But if you and your spouse go into this determined to do whatever it takes, you'll be fine.

There is definite support for spouses. DMU has a spousal support group. You will also make friends with the numerous other couples that will undoubtedly be in the same situation as you.

They just seem to deal with it. Realistically, it is not fun for anyone. Any statement contrary to this is less than truthful. You have to study your tail off and normally home is not the best place to study, so you often leave early, get home late, and don't see your family but for 15 min. a day. This is probably 3 days a week for me. The other days I see my family for about 3 hours. That's MY reality.😱

One thing that helped my wife is getting involved. DMU has a spouse orgnization that is very active. She made many friends and became a member of the board. They go to movies, out to dinner, themepark days with the kids etc. The organization pays for most of it so its pretty awesome. They also have clubs within the organization that anyone can become members of as well such as scrapbooking, cooking and other various categories. We have two kids and the organization provided babysitting most of the time. This may be something you want to look into. Although it helps, your family will still have to sacrifice and its still tough.

It seems to me that the majority with familes/children are the men. I'm guessing for a female going through podiatry school, best is just to hold off until after everything. 🙁 So during residency, are they 'flexible' at all? I'm just assuming you dont get any maternity leave haha.

The information was great. I thought I'd slip into the world of pod students and see what you thought. In addition about a post on the genius3rdrow. Some of the comments have been quite out of control and to see them coming from people who 1 month ago were clueless makes me even a little irritated. They protect there school based on there tour and words from the admissions officer that talked with them. Anyhow thanks again and hope to see some of you this coming spring/summer. WhooooPig sooooie.

Well females can meet their future husbands in Pod School 😉 Do most people come in married or engaged already? So far at all of my interviews thats what it seems like.

I think it depends on the school. I would guess that their is a higher rate of married or engaged students at DMU than NYCPM. One thing to remember is you have PAs and DOs that you attend class w/ at DMU, so that increases the female population.
