I am considering studying abroad in England (either University of Sussex or UCL) the fall semester of junior year. However, my concern is that I would have to take one semester of physics abroad. The grades from there would transfer to my school and be accounted in my GPA. However, I have read that it is advisable not to take the science pre-reqs abroad. I was wondering if I should take the risk of taking one semester of physics abroad or not. Would this not be considered by most med schools?

I did this. Took two semesters of physics over the summer in Sussex. Nobody's complained about it 🙂

I second this. In fact, interviewers seem to respond very positively to my studying abroad in England. Also, Sussex is a beautiful campus. I still regard it as one of the best decisions I made in college.

I studied abroad at UCL and took bio classes. They were considered upper-div though and not a pre-req. I think a lot of schools don't accept pre-reqs from foreign universities. The safest bet would be to look up each school you're interested in and read the fine print or call them up. Do you HAVE to take physics while studying abroad?

BTW, I second that studying abroad is one of the best decisions I made in college too.

Actually, since it's an EAP course, it counts the same as if you took it at your home university. You don't even need to get the transcripts for AMCAS.

I studied abroad twice in college. To make up for missing a semester of Orgo I decided to take the whole year in the summer instead. Would summer physics be an option for you?

Well technically you still need the transferred credit transcript for AMCAS, but not the foreign one, no. Some of the schools I applied to said they don't count foreign classes for pre-reqs, including study abroad. Or something like, "we prefer if it was done at your home institution even if the credit was transferred in." It'll just make things a little easier in the long run if you don't take a pre-req abroad if you can help it.

Are you sure that applies to EAP? I don't doubt your knowledge. I just got different info from my advisors and schools I applied to about my EAP credits. I didn't need a transferred credit transcript. Oh well... LadyMich is right: it's best to call and ask.

OP, don't pass up an opportunity to study abroad over something like a semester of physics. Best case scenario, you get to go abroad and your physics credits are accepted for medical school. Worst case scenario, they aren't accepted and you have to repeat first semester physics at your home institution before you matriculate. I'd definitely go abroad and not even worry about it. The experience you get will be well worth it. 👍
