My dad suggested this, and I am thinking of studying broad in Japan for a year. The classes I take there will not be included in my GPA.

How do MD and DO programs look at such an experience?

It sounds like an interesting experience. I'm sure that when you are ready to apply for medical school you'll bring something interesting to the table. What I would do would be to look into how the health care field is depicted in Japan, maybe some of your experiences can be included in your personal statement.
