How about salad with a new dressing? Or try sprinkling something new on top. I like cheese on my salad. Croutons are good too. I once tried tuna on my salad and I don't think I made it right because it tasted gross.

Eating something like baby carrots is a good thing. If you're just sitting around, snacking will keep that metabolism running. It can have a profound effect.

Something that works great is low-sodium V8. Personally, I can't stand the taste of it (acid + celery doesn't work for me unless there's a ton of fat -- see: potato salad), but some people like it.

Incidentally, pineapple juice is a good diuretic (says my girlfriend) for those days every month. Be careful with the juices though; you might as well drink vitamin-fortified soda.

hmm... I would say triscuits with sharp cheddar.... and maybe an apple to sweeten things up... if you dont like triscuits then go with the wheat thins... mmmm wheat thins are good...

Without rambling too far off topic on menstruation, mooning and the like (oh wait that's already been done here) I'd suggest:

air popped popcorn (air poppers are like 15 bucks at target)
baby carrots (or babies...without their faces of course)
yogurt or applesauce (it only requires ONE utensil in theory, a spoon, or you can just slurp out of the container)
string cheese
dry cereal (i am a fan of honeycomb)
luna bars or zone bars or something of that nature
trail mix
frozen peas (seriously)

it's funny because I study totally differently. I don't allow myself to eat unless I'm taking a break. But don't be too impressed, I break VERY frequently 😳

TLC Chewy Trail Mix Granola Bar

These are really good & worth searching out.

One takes forever to chew and will tire out your jaw. Then you will rest your mouth until you need another snack. High fiber & protein, and vegan IIRC.

Alternately, might I suggest fruitcake? 😛

my thing id sunflower seeds... a la Fox Mulder

as well as apples and just fruits in general. they wake up you, get your brain working and have soo little calories.
oh! go with tomatoes though! they have like what, 15 calories for 10 of then? they are awesome. but id go with
tomatoes,
apples,
peaches,
cucumbers with some salt,
sunflower seeds
rice cakes!!!!

string cheese, triscuits, apples, cocaine, gun powder, lighter fluid, lead paint....ummm.... sunlight and water is good if you're a plant....

got nothin' original, really... everyone's come up with good ideas

basically:
1. fruits & vegetables (fruit w/ higher fiber is better as it keeps your blood sugar more stable and keeps you satiated longer, e.g. apples and pears with the skins)
2. lean protein (meat and/or dairy)
3. complex carbohdrates (again, the higher the fiber the better, i.e. anything "100% whole wheat")

OP, mix and match these foods and come up with something that meets the criteria of your intial post.

Additionally, a good way to minimize the ASSets, is to eat smaller portions more often throughout the day. Essentially, the South Beach diet: complex carbs, lots of veggies, lean protein, 4-5 meals a day.

If the tasty, higher calorie snacks are too much to resist (like tasty tasty muffins and chocolate and sugar and babies) gum is something nice to keep your mouth busy while you study.

sucking on ice is also an option. But apparently chewing it is bad for you. Boo.

It'd be kind of messy to eat this without utensils, though, which was one of the criteria.

What exactly are you implying?!
:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Also, these sound completely awesome. Where do you get them?

We might just have a kitten, people.

Here on the East Coast, at least, they are available in any supermarket. My mother and sister go through a box of those things a week, so they must be good.

Kashi Granola Bars

I get them at the supermarket. They are in the aisle with cereal bars. Some stores might put them in the "health food" aisle. You might also check with www.kashi.com to find retailers near you. They do contain honey and "milk ingredients" according to the label (as well as wheat, soy, peanuts & other tree nuts) so they aren't exactly vegan but they are "faceless".

Google has not failed! Apparently they ARE, in fact, available in most supermarkets.
Which means i must leave my house today.
le sigh...
it'll be worth it. i have to condition myself over the smmer, i only have 19 days until fall semester starts.

Ahh. i thought you were calling me a fruitcake
it wouldn't be the first time.

I am a dried mango and gushers fan. Unfortunately, dried mangos are pretty dense, so you'd have to portion control, but your brain needs that extra supply of glucose when you're studying, right?

My suggestion was going to be frozen peas or grapes too!

But that was taken.

hmm

Bearnaked Granola?
It's pretty good.. protein, fiber, etc. The PB&J kind is awesome.. it has dried raspberries. However, I suppose it could exponentially increase the backside if you ate enough of it.

I'd stick with carrots, apples, celery, grapes, etc.

Whenever I need to study, I usually just whip up my specialty. Basically, I take two eggs. I fry'em up and wrap them around two hot dogs. I then take 6 slices of american cheese and cover the egg-dogs. I then melt a pound of butter, dunk the cheese-egg-dogs in the butter with both hands while I crack open my neuroscience book with my feet. Naturally, I do all this in the bath tub because it gets sorta messy. After I'm done, I pass out for about 30 minutes due to a cholesterol embolism. Following the stroke, my brain is refreshed and ready for a hard night of study!

Beer popsicles!

mmmm...beercicles....

i was going to suggest my favorite, the jello shot. no. really. i AM over 30...

also, if you've never had a beer float, those are good food...take a nice dark lager or stout, put in a scoop of real nice high quality vanilla ice cream. delicious!

I write my best essays after 2 guinnesses - great for secondaries.

I know I'm a bit late on this...but...

Get a food dehydrator, get some of your favorite fruits, cut thin, and dehydrate. My personal favorites are dried watermelon and dried cantaloupe. (with the watermelon, you have to slice a bit thicker than most fruits - the damn things are mostly water!)

I usually do a whole bunch at once so I only have to do it once a quarter or so.

I munched on a box of Kashi once. It was the "Wheaties" kind called Autumn Brown Sugar or something. I originally bought it to eat in the morning but I didn't like it with milk. Sooo good, but too bad Kashi is about 4 bucks a box.

This is worse than trying to find diet-friendly food. 😛

I'd honestly say that tying food to studying will be bad for you because of what people say about studying in med school. Too much of anything will cause bad things to happen to you and addiction will follow!!

What's good eat during test day??

I need something that will wake my mind up instantly.. plus.. something that could possibly have me miraculously know everything on the PS.

well, you don't "eat" it, but a bump will wake ya' up pretty damn fast ;-)

and for the OP, it won't put on weight...the opposite if done enough, in fact.

i need a new one. i have spent many hours conditioning myself to study while i'm eating strawberries and SF cool whip, now every time i eat that, i have to study. Have to. i must also add that until recently, i have been very, very single. Now that i have found a man capable of holding up his end of a conversation and just generally worth spending the majority of my free time with...i realize what an absolutely HORRIBLE oversight that particular food choice was 😳

So i need a new study food. It must:
- not be messy.
- be easily consumed with only one hand.
- be reasonably portable.
- not require ANY utensils.
- not be too weird.
- not cause my ass to expand exponentially with every A i earn!! This is important, people!! Please mind my calorie intake.
- be something i actually like, but can live without until i have to study.
- not have a face 🙁 🙁

I'm vegetarian too. Try snacking on a Kashi bar or some trailmix. Nuts are a great source of protein and good brain food. Also, butter-free popcorn is a good, low-calorie snack. But after a while the plain taste might get to you.

I, personally, love baby carrots. They're fresh, healthy, and really good.

I get paranoid that I'll OD on the beta-carotene, turn orange, go into liver failure, and die.
