im pretty sure this question has been asked a million times by now. but i just wanted to get a few advice on the best way to study for the DATS. i plan on taking it this spring and i really wanna get a head start on studying. my advisor "advised" me to take the Kaplan review classes($1299+). but some have said it wasnt worth the money. some say to buy the book and study on my own. some say make flash cards.
and is there any physics on there? cuz i ABOSLUTELY HATE physics. lol

any advice would be great!
gluck to u guys

Nope, no physics. 😀 ...which is awesome, since I abhor the subject.

I didn't take the Kaplan classes, I studied on my own. I used the Kaplan textbook and some MCAT books I had (Exam Krackers). I wrote out note and made flashcards, just standard stuff. I didn't bother studying for the quantative reasoning or the reading comprehension and did good on both sections. You'll have to watch out for the perceptual ability section. I hated that one!

DAT Discussions...

kaplan is good bc they give you a lot of practice materials. I liked that a lot... it is expensive, so u figure it out if it worth it for u or not.

Beg someone on this board to send you the kaplan files for free (value $1100). Study and master those then move on to topscore. Study and master topscore and review where you need it then move on to DAT achiever. Study and master the content then take the DAT.

does anyone have the kaplan files???????? please let me know🙂

I printed them all of and sold them for hundreds of dollars to a sucker predent who didn't know better. Just kidding. I never printed any of them.

I think I have em on a thumb drive. I seem to remember them being too big to e-mail and I am not computer saavy enough to put them on the web somewhere. Any ideas?

Right. Kaplan is ridiculously expensive. That being said, their practice material is top shelf and their study material is nothing to laugh at. Its actually pretty nice because they will tell you exactly what you don't need to know, and can thus save precious hours not studying superfluous material. They also teach you which species employ malpighian tubules in their excretory system. I nearly did a backflip when I saw this appear on test day. They have tons of practice sections for all parts of the DAT and I feel that the sheer number of practice problems they have almost justifies the price. They have like > ten section tests for each sub section of the PAT. Oh yeah, going to the lectures is an INSANE waste of time if you are good at learning on your own. If you're not, then I guess they're somewhat useful. The moral of the story is this: Kaplan needs to start a scholarship fund.

However, until that happens, I would recommend the online class option. You get all the study material and none of the in class lecture... altho i guess you could theoretically crash that. The last time i checked it was about $200-300 less expensive (although its been a long time since i have checked). If you do buy the material second hand from another individual, make sure they give you all the books, all the flash cards, and all the practice tests. I think there are close to 100 section tests. Although it is ultimately up to you.

Ohhhh yeah one more thing. Kaplan does have mock tests that are given in the exact format (on computer) as you will see on test day. To get access to that, you may have to buy the course from kaplan.

Maybe this was helpful? I hope?
