Hey,

I am currently a sophomore undergrad student and I am thinking about studying abroad this coming summer somewhere in Europe. I was wondering if that looks good or bad to dental schools and is it recommended? Also, I have checked out a few programs already and I can't seem to find any other courses offered other than languages or history. Anyone have any knowledge about this? Thanks.

wow- Im a 2nd year student hoping to study abroad this coming summer too! I studied aborad during spring break last year and I'm hooked!

I can't really speak from experience (obviously), but from speaking to current dental students and admissions staff, studying abroad does NOT hurt you at all. They're looking for students who are passionate about what they participate in (whatever it may be) and that can speak about it intelligently and with passion later on. Also, a lot of dental students Ive talked to always express how much they wished they would've studied abroad during undergrad.

Stuyding language and history is great (especially in another country)! You will be a more well rounded person and there are a TON of pre-dents who are majoring in non-science areas. Also, you'll learn a new langauge! (Bigger client pool for the future...)

Of course, if you're looking for science related courses, you could look into a Biological based program (usually dealing with ecology, etc.) OR research abroad.

Hope you end up studying abroad- its an amazing experience! (Judging from my one week in europe lol)

DEFINITELY go abroad!!!!

I didn't even go during the summer, i was one of the few pre-healths who went abroad, my Junior Spring Semester. I wouldn't trade it for anything...I obviously had to squeeze some science classes into the summer, but if you plan it well, you can totally go. and for a summer, that's definitely possible.

have fun!

Study abroad is definitely a good idea! It's a little difficult to fit it in because we have to take all of the science classes and those are pretty much impossible to take abroad. I went during the summer and it worked out perfectly and I actually got ahead. Dental schools definitely look at it as a positive experience. I've been asked about my experience in pretty much all of my interviews and the interviewers said that it was really great that I did it. I think it makes you a really well-rounded applicant for sure!
