I am starting this because I may be different than most but maybe a lot like you...
1) I don't think Dental Decks are all that great. I purchased the set new and I find the questions super simple and the explanations on the back too encompassing. You either will get the answer right so you feel like why spend 10 minutes reading the back, I must know this! Or you miss it and start reading and it is explaining 4 steps behind the question. The explanation starts you at the beginning of the idea every time instead of the meat of the subject... making it take, in my case, more than 2 hours for 50 cards. And the pictures they have... geez! just get your anatomy atlas out.
2) Why is no one using coursesaver's prep quizzes? I had to blindly purchase 180 day subscription based on how useful Chad was for the DAT. I say blindly because I could not find reviews anywhere. I think, although there is some minor editing that needs to be done, this site will be very helpful for simulating exam situations and the questions seem a little more relevant but still probably easier than the real thing. But you can custom make quizzes and it keeps track of the time spent on each question. And the q bank is over 5000 I think. I am just starting and I won't be able to evaluate how good it really is until after I take the exam but so far I like it. The explanations are also usually very lengthy but the important things are highlighted and they usually explain the main point at first, then it goes over a little more history.
3) I don't think you need 6 or even 3 months to study for this thing. Everyone has their way and there is a possibility I wont even pass but I am studying for 2 weeks now and then two weeks before I take the exam... I'll let you know how that works out if you want to know. I do not plan to study much during the semester but I did purchase one book, Dental Board Busters II Edition, to read throughout the semester if I have time. I am a cram type of studier so if you are an over-preparer this won't work but I keep hearing passing this exam is not directly related to how much or how long you study but what you already knew. Hopefully I already know enough!
Taking the exam during winter break.
Study Materials:
Dental Decks 13-14 = Crap $Insane$
coursesaver.com NBDE Part I quizzes = so far awesome $100.00
Dental Board Busters Book, II Edition = in transit from amazon to my home $139 new
The last couple of days before the exam I plan to exclusively look at old released exams but not until then. I may take one or two old ones on Thanksgiving break. We'll see. Have fun!!! Good Luck! I hope this helped somebody 🙂
