I plan on taking my MCAT in about a year. Since I don't consider myself a strong reader, I am anticipating a low score in VR. I want to start some light studying on reading comprehension far in advance. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to study from, or what to read?

NYT articles. Richard Selzer books. Nonfictions in general.

Or you could just read the old MCAT VR sections....... it's not like they're hidden away in a lockbox...

I just did 1 passage/day for about 3 weeks before the MCAT, and it got me an 11 (started at a 7 I think). Nothing spectacular, but not bad. I also thought the MCAT I took had a viciously hard VR section.

Long story short, I would just recommend you buy TPR VR workbook as well as EK 101 and just do as many passages as possible.

My piece of advice would be to start thinking higher numbers for yourself in terms of VR! Don't sell yourself short by thinking you're a slow reader or whatever. Be confident and think positively and do all the other things people mentioned above this! lol 🙂

I would recommend reading challenging texts versus doing practice passages. Reading the newspaper as someone else suggested is a good option. Also Sn2ed recommends reading the economist for those who want to get an early start. If you still have a number of gen-ed requirements left to fill, I would highly recommend a philosophy class if you haven't already taken one. I've found philosophy readings to be the most challenging I have come across thus far.
