anyone have trouble getting motivated to study? I'm not sure what my problem is..I had all weekend to study and I couldn't get myself to sit down and read. I even tried bringing my textbook to work and I ended up playing on the computer instead (it's usually slow enough to the point that I get bored at work). And I'm getting nervous because I'm taking 18 credits this semester and I don't know why I won't start my hw right after class. I usually end up studying for things the night before ..or do my hw the night before it's due. Anyone deal with this problem? ..maybe I'm lazy? How do you all get things done on time?..any tips on getting rid of my laziness?? 😕

All the time. This was part of my undoing throughout high school and my first two years of college. Granted, I got through high school just fine on procrastination alone and earned my 28 on the ACT without studying, but I know I could have done a lot better had I bothered to and now regret not kicking myself into gear a lot earlier - it would have helped me financially here in undergrad.

I'm sitting on a 2.6 after two years of harboring an almost complete lack of motivation and an endless amount of procrastination. Obviously this isn't conducive towards getting into any medical school anywhere and now I'll probably have to work longer and extra hard to make myself competitive.

I'm assuming that since you're here, your big goal for the moment is to earn good grades to get yourself into medical school. I've finally set that goal for myself and usually I just try to remind myself that I have a goal now and the only way to reach it is to do what I have to do - homework, studying, etc. - and in a timely fashion.

I'm still struggling with this 6 year-old academic habit of mine, but I've got to keep fighting myself or I won't succeed. Just try to remind yourself that you're doing this stuff for a reason; keep that reason in your head at all times.

yea, I've been this way since hs too. But it worked fine then..I managed to make honors still..and then in college it completely backfired. I was able to get C's in the classes that I finished, but I transferred to another college and grades went up. I think it's easier at this college because there are less students in a single class which means the teacher will notice if you're not there..plus there is an attendance policy for most classes.

Anyways, I wasn't completely sure that I wanted to take this route until i transferred last spring. I kept changing my mind..had md route in mind..but kept thinking that I wasn't motivated enough or that I already messed up my first year in college. Well I'm really trying this year, I plan on goin to all my classes. I just need to force myself to go to the library right after class, otherwise things won't get done at home.

Me Too!!! (or three or four or whatever)

I've learned not to force myself, though. It does no good, except maybe it gets you to hate studying even more. So I allow myself my procrastinating time, and eventually my brain will automatically think "Okay, time to hit the books" and then I study. Why?, because one can only be so lazy.

I've done well since I've used this technique (as opposed to the Let's lock myself in the library for 10 hours and force myself to read 40 pages of o-chem, do 100 practice problems and finish that Brit Lit paper technique. Yeah, that did not work.

Relax. Motivation will come.

Yeah. I'm having a hard time getting myself into the habit of studying when it feels like I don't need to, though. My Anatomy & Physiology I class is just not impressing me - all we've done in two weeks is talk about anatomical terms, positions, and regions; body cavities; and chemistry I learned back in high school, like valence electrons and the difference between an ionic and covalent bond.

I need to get out of community college. I'm glad I decided to hold off on doing any of my pre-reqs until I got to the university this January.

http://studygs.net/motivation.htm

maybe a little to much in depth...but it gives you something to work with... on the main page it also has tons of other info pertaining to concentrating while studying..time management..etc...very helpful i felt

Take a break!! Whenever I get burnt out I have a "No Homework Weekend", and I do something really fun, like go to a water park on Friday, then party on Saturday, and then sleep and read and watch TV on Sunday. It always seems to help me get back on task after feeling really overwhelmed and bummed out by schoolwork.

what sucks for me is that i work best between the hours of 11PM and 2/3AM. so i'll be on a roll, getting everything done, going to bed late, waking up at 730AM for class, being pissed at myself for getting so little sleep, swearing i'll stop goofing off earlier and starting work earlier, and starting the cycle again. haha.

my semester starts tomorrow (today, i guess, looking at the time...). i'm very interested to see how it will go, seeing as this is my first semester since becoming obsessed with this website. i see long hours of SDN in my future and not so many hours of studying...

You're not the only one that works late at night.

I find the stillness and quietness of those hours to be the best environment for me to concentrate fully on whatever I'm reading. 3pm or 10am is just too early, too much to do, classes to go to, people outside, and overall just activity out there.

But at night nothing can distract me. 😍

Add me to the list of people who study best at night as well. I can never get myself to study during the day. I'm usually in class, taking a nap, or both.

Depends on time and environment. Some people study best at 7 am in the corner of the library where everything is either quiet or dead....others study at midnight in the middle of a frat party.

Either way, you have to find your ideal environment. Studying in an un-ideal environment is like studying inefficiently, and it's just a horrible idea.

There are also several books on helping to preclude procrastination...might want to give those a try.

Best of luck,
-Dr. P.

yea I usually get my hw done at night..like I said the night before something needs to be turned in. but, I'm still gona attempt to sit in the library after class and see how productive I can be. thanks everyone 🙂

Yup, been there, done that.

I realized I could not study at home. I had to go to the library. I needed to see other people suffering with me. It also gave a community aspect.

Also, coffee was my savior. It really helped me focus. A trigger. Eventually, the problem became i could not study without it, but oh well.

Make your study schedule regular. Do not go home in between classes. Stay on campus, get a cup of coffee and put in ur daily two hours.

Sounds like my schedule.

I'm right there with you all. I have an exam tonite that I had all weekend to prepare for and yet still can't seem to bring myself to finish my studying.

I'm almost exactly the same way. I just can't seem to get too much done unless it's late and everything's wound down.
