studying like 24.7.....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I feel ya man, in the beginning of my junior year I decided to do dentistry and I also just transferred from cc to a University. I knew I wanted to get into dental school so I studied almost every waking moment while ignoring my friends, family and even my girlfriend. All that I have to say is that it gets better. Remember why you are doing everything that you are my friend!

Buddy, yes this is normal. I have certainly put in the alll day sessions, literally non stop studying on Saturdays for 14 hours straight, with no needed breaks. I would eat on my walk between classes, and get up early to study before my morning classes. After class review your notes, until you have the energy to really crack the books. You will literally feel insane if you are doing it right, you will start to laugh and not know whats funny, just keep pushing. You may honestly need and deserve a break, interesting. When I left the DAT, i was so pumped, took a seat in my car in the parking lot and adjusted my review mirror. Scared myself. Both my eyes were bloodshot, my hair was amuck, I stunk, and clearly needed a shave. I have had times when I couldn't even use the phone. You are prob posting on here because you're starting to lose it, good, keep it up! Best of luck!

So I'm not in dental school yet, Im doing a year of postbacc bc my gpa could use a boost
anyways, perhaps since i didnt work THAT hard at all during undergrad (more like i breezed through)...i need to know if its NORMAL TO STUDY LIKE ALL THE TIME. im taking 4 courses right now, and i am always studying....now i know im personally doing this bc i want to get 4.0s so badly but....is this normal?? or am i just slow....
I almost feel bad that im ignoring my family and friends bc i am legit reading some textbook or notes all day everyday....someone please do tell me youre living or have lived a parallel lifestyle....also im assuming dental school life is like this too? but at least then i'd have the assurance that im IN dental school. Now i have the pressure of MAKING the correct grades to even get there.
Dental school life isn't too bad. It depends who you hang out with and if you choose to have a life outside of school. It helps manage stress and makes the long, crappy days not so bad....

Make sure you are studying smart, and not just hard.

depending on the school you get into I would get used to that if I were you. I am not trying to get you down or anything, but undergrad may seem like a cakewalk compared to your first year of dental school. If I studied as hard as I am right now (D1) I would have had a 4.0 no problem in undergrad. It is not the difficulty so much as the volume, I was a Biology major for undergrad and worked 40 plus hours a week for most of it and that was nothing compared to how much I work now. I usually spend around 14 hours a day at least studying. On the other hand I enjoy for the most part what I am studying (fewer fluff classes) so it is not as hard to focus as it was in undergrad. Just don't expect things to be a lot easier once you get into dental school, at least not for the first year or so. I was talking to one of my predent friends the other day and we were talking about this same subject and I described it to him like this, If you are a biology major take a 12-15 credit load and scrunch a weeks worth of classes into a day and there you have dental/medical school. You don't have to know quite the detail but that is the volume you have to get in everyday.
Good luck on your post bac and hope it helps out, and good luck on your dental school aspirations. Anything worth doing is worth working hard for. Oh and on the bright side the weeks fly by with the heavy load so 4 years will pass in a hurry.

Dude, don't sweat it. Life is about challenges and rising to the occasion. That's what you are doing right now: rising to the occasion. When dental school comes, you clearly will do the same.

Don't burn yourself out.

I know what your going through. My last 58 credits of post-bacc were solid 4.0... and that was by design. I didn't study 24/7 per-se (and I HIGHLY doubt you are too), but I did do my fair share of studying A LOT.

One thing I learned from undergrad is that, most professors make it fairly "easy" for students to earn a 3.5 (or little higher) if they work somewhat "hard" in the class. But it takes almost twice the effort to get that 3.5 to 4.0...... sounds like its not worth it right? well, not for us post-baccers, we are looking to bump up GPA, so we need all the 4.0s we can get.

So my point is, its totally normal to study beyond what your normally accustomed to. Its also normal to study more than anyone else in your class, cause I highly every student in your class is shooting for that perfect 4.0.... they are probably just aiming for a 3.5+.

I wish I had your problem. I procrastinate like no other and go crazy after studying for over an hour.

I usually pull through in the end though.
